So very stubbly.
This page is rather stubbly and could use some expansion.
Are you a bad enough dude to rescue this article?

Battle Kid: Fortress of Peril is a difficult Metroidvania platformer inspired by the likes of I Wanna Be The Guy.

Version Differences

Demo Version

Released in August 2009, and has several differences from the final release version.

Version Proto

Prior to release, the prototype version was shown around in videos and such. During the initial production run, a production error resulted in about 50 v1.00 cartridges having Version Proto instead.

The build date on this version is 11/02/2009.

Limited Edition

A set of individually-numbered Limited Edition cartridges were released.

v1.00

The main retail release.

The build date on this version is 01/10/2010.

v1.10

Released on July 2, 2010.

This version redrew the cartridge label art, fixed an invincibility bug, and added a ScrewAttack Gaming Convention level (password SGCLEVEL).

The build date on this version is 05/10/2010.

v2.00

The Japanese release.

  • This version has six difficulty levels: Very Easy, Easy, Normal, Hard, Very Hard, and Unfair. The difficulty levels differ in the amount of HP you have, the number of lives you start with, and how many shots it takes to kill enemies.
  • The storyline was rewritten, and an intro and two new bosses were added.
  • The map layout has changed a fair bit, making some of the areas easier, and some of the bosses had a complete change of attack patterns.
  • The bad ending of this version gives you a chance to retry for the good ending, which is still doable, even if you forgot to pick up Key 4. In fact, if you don't get the good ending, you don't get the casting call nor any bonus passwords.
  • Two new bonus levels were added, along with a password taking you straight to the boss of the original bonus level. However, the ScrewAttack Gaming Convention level was removed from this version.

The build date on this version is 07/01/2018.

v2.10

The release for Itch.io, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.

The Japanese text can only be accessed through the debugging menu. In addition to bug fixes and typo corrections, it adds an Arcade Mode (skips the intro stage and most cutscenes), new music for the second section of the final area, and a boss to the third bonus level (complete with a new password taking you straight to the battle).

The build date on this version is 04/04/2022.

v2.11

The release for Nintendo Switch, as well as an update for the previous digital releases.

The palette cycle of the waterfall in the Waterfall Temple has been tweaked in this version.

The build date on this version is 11/07/2022.

Unused Areas

Acactussayswhat?
Please elaborate.
Having more detail is always a good thing.

HP Upgrade

This area is only present in v2.00, and cannot be accessed normally. v2.10 changed it to a music visualizer and made it accessible with a double jump.

Unused Music

In Version 2 of the game, the song "Intro #2A" from the prior versions can only be found in the version of the music test accessed through the in-game debug menu. It is listed as Song 08.

Battle Kid 2 leftovers

For Version 2 of the game, the player movement code was backported from Battle Kid 2. The code which handles grab blocks is present in the game, but there are no grab blocks anywhere, nor is there the item that would let you use them.
