The translations on this page need to be proofread. If you are fluent enough in this language, please make any corrections necessary!
Hmmm...
To do:
Check more of the Korean and Simplified/Traditional Chinese text from the 1.1.0 and 1.2.0 updates.

The Evm and mm folders contain the game's script. Within these folders' files are alternate versions of final lines, placeholder text, and completely unused messages.

Evm

Primarily "event" text, such as subtitles for cutscenes.

event_0000

Subtitles meant for the message displayed before the Records of Time Chapter begins. In the final, only the Japanese, Chinese, and Korean subtitles are displayed.

The base game's Records of Time message unintentionally reused the first game's message, which read "in a universe of light and dark, where perception is reality". The English text was restored to the intended message, "in a universe of light and dark, where time reflects infinitely", in version 1.2.0 on Nintendo Switch. However, even before this correction, the German (unused) and Japanese subtitles did translate to the correct "where time reflects infinitely" message.

English German Spanish French Italian

An early version of Jeanne's line in the Prologue where she tells Bayonetta she forgot to buy the caviar. The characters "買い" (to buy) in Jeanne's line are absent from the final.

Subtitles for the scene where Jeanne protects Bayonetta from Gomorrah are in both event_1030.mcd and event_9006.mcd. These files are duplicates of one another in all languages except Japanese, in which event_1030.mcd contains an earlier revision.

event_3a01

ph22d_3200

When Glamor lunges at Loki in Chapter I, he exclaims "bloody hell", but the subtitle displayed is different ("Whoa!"). The subtitle that matches the audio remains in this file, unused.

English Bloody hell!! Whoa!
German Verdammte Scheiße!! He!
Spanish ¡Joder!
French Oh merde !
Italian Cazzo! Oh!

ph22b_3200

A line from Loki intended for Chapter I, when Bayonetta approaches him while he's trapped under Valiance's remains.

English Dammit, let me go, you piece of...
German Verdammt. Lass mich, du dreckiges...
Spanish Que me sueltes, joder, cacho de...
French Bordel, lâche-moi espèce de...
Italian Cazzo, lasciami andare, pezzo di...
Korean
Simplified Chinese
Traditional Chinese

There is also a voiced version of this line in the game's files.

The Japanese script for this scene begins with Loki saying this line, then has Bayonetta respond to him with "so, they're after you too then". The English script, on the other hand, omits Loki's line and starts with Bayonetta's response, so this audio normally goes unheard during gameplay-- however, it can be triggered by enabling the specific combination of English voices and Japanese subtitles.

phf0f_000

Contains subtitles intended for the demo's "To Be Continued" trailer.

In a universe of light and dark,
where time reflects infinitely...

To Be Continue...

phf04_3f40 and event_8010

phf04_3f40.mcd (located near Rodin's shop dialogue) and event_8010.mcd (the ending cutscene in which Balder dons his mask from the first game) each contain placeholder text from the Japanese short story "Rashomon", by Ryunosuke Akutagawa.

mm

In-game text, such as descriptions for items, and text seen when using Y to Check.

mmSTG000

A myriad of text that includes an early, vastly different story outline for the first few Chapters.

The lines labeled as "boy" were to be said by Loki, as that is his internal codename. The "p" prefix on some of the lines' labels mean they were supposed to appear during specific points in a Chapter, referred to internally as "phases".

p270 later became the part in Chapter V where Loki and Bayonetta talk while ascending the stairway inside the Cathedral of Cascades.

p275 corresponds to the part when you play as Loki and run from the Urbane chasing him. Speeding up during "birdification" may have been an early option to outpace the Urbane, rather than throwing cards at it.

p012, p290, p2b0, and p053 no longer exist in the files.

mmSTG020

Contains "Check" text up to Chapter V. The three lines below were intended to appear at some point before you meet Loki in Chapter I.

The Japanese lines appear to have the same meanings as the English ones. The first line is unique, however, in that it refers to Bayonetta in third-person rather than the usual first-person point-of-view.

English Japanese
The angel flies off without paying me any heed at all. Seems like they're quite busy on their end as well.
Someone or something has closed the gate. I'm curious as to why, but it's best to move on for now.
Some kind of ritual is being performed. The drawing seems to be of a witch and a sage.

mmSTG030

Lines pertaining to Chapter VII, "The Ark". Only one goes unused:

English Cannon ready in:
German Schussbereit in:
Spanish Cañón listo en:
French Canon armé dans :
Italian Cannone pronto a far fuoco fra:
Japanese
Korean

Oddly, though the Ark does fire a "cannon" of energy during the Insidious fight, these lines are with ones found after Insidious swallows Bayonetta and the Ark is destroyed.

Much more unused text can be found in the Japanese file. In addition to the above, there is also text pertaining to an entire scrapped puzzle sequence involving the destroyed Ark. The player would have had to locate its parts and put them together once more. However, it is unclear whether this puzzle would take place during Insidious's fight, inside Insidious, or some time afterwards.

The line referring to a barrier with the label "STG_P340_CHECK_GATE" likely refers to the unused "gate" and "keyhole word"s.

The Japanese version also has unused Bewitchments. Their descriptions appear to match the ones above. 剣乱豪苛 (kenran-gouka) is a coinage, its sound is from 豪華絢爛 (gouka-kenran), which means "magnificent". The character meanings are: 剣 (sword), 乱 (rough/violent), 豪 (strong), 苛 (torment).

Battle Action

mmITM000 and mmITM100

mmITM000.mcd contains every weapon name in the game, while mmITM100.mcd holds their descriptions. Five weapons in total are unused or have unseen text.

English Japanese
Arwing

The Arwing weapon is automatically equipped over "Love is Blue" while wearing the Star Mercenary costume; however, its name and description are never loaded in the Subscreen.

English A space gun Rodin staked his reputation on developing, using starfighter plans obtained from a few secret connections. It showcases the latest advances in science and the wicked arts.

While the Arwing does not contain demons like those found in typical infernal weapons, it seems to be housing something inconceivable.

This makes it a particularly difficult gun to control that must be used with a specially made suit in order to release its true potential.

In mmITM101.mcd exists what was intended to be a description of Jeanne's version of the Arwing. All lines are the same as the above except for the last sentence, which is replaced with:

Difficult to control, this gun requires a custom suit to release its true potential.

English German Japanese Korean Simplified/Traditional Chinese
Mistelteinn Misteltein

Mistelteinn is labeled as "ITM_WEAPON_NAME_04_01" internally. The first number, 04, refers to the character that uses it, while the number afterward refers to the item's ID. Character ID 01 is Bayonetta, 02 is Jeanne, and 03 is Rosa. The only other playable character in Story Mode is Loki, so this weapon was presumably meant for his use.

Mistelteinn also translates to "mistletoe". In Norse mythology, a spear of mistletoe was used by Loki to kill Baldr. Mistelteinn's description likely references this.

Description Translation
One of the things that can damage the Lumen Sage.

The final three weapons are found exclusively in the Japanese files. They only have a dash for their names and descriptions, but by looking at their labels, it can be assumed they were for Jeanne, Rosa, and Loki.

mmSUB052

Contains descriptions of Infernal Demons. Queen Sheba has an entry (with a few grammatical errors), though she doesn't appear in-game.

Queen Sheba

When the cosmos was split into light, darkness, and chaos in between, the incredibly powerful Sheba was born alongside the darkness controlling world of Inferno. As she lives in the hellish land, and is often classified as a demon; however, the full details of her existence are unknown.

Having brough order to Inferno, the sense of fright all hold towards Sheba is the root of her exalted title - Queen. Not a single soul has ever laid eyes on her, and it is said she has no true form.

Instead, the vast darkness that spreads over the entirety of Inferno is said to be Sheba herself. Many witches are said to have experimented with summoning this spirit, only to have the cost be their very lives, as they are dragged into the depths of hell. Even if one were able to summon the Queen, it would most likely be only a sliver of the full power this legendary being possesses.

Malphas also has an entry, but it has no description.

Malphas

Lastly, there is a placeholder entry for an additional Infernal summon, but its name and description are merely a dash symbol.

Miscellaneous

Each enemy file in the game has a corresponding .csv that assigns it health values, as well as damage parameters to its attacks. There are also short comments with nearly every parameter.

  • A few angels have increased HP values, which, according to the comments, were intended to be applied when fighting them inside a "battleship" (likely Worship or Resplendence, given the use of "senkan", their internal name).

em0060.csv Compassion HP_01,2000,戦艦内部(未使用) Inside the battleship (unused)
em0061.csv Cachet HP_01,3000,戦艦内部(未使用) Inside the battleship (unused)
  • Many enemies, including unused ones, have dummied out or unused attacks and HP values.
    • Urbane's "on the tower" parameter is likely applied when it chases Loki to the top of the Cathedral of Cascades, but since you are scripted to reach the top before you can kill it, it goes unused.
    • Given the comments on Aesir's other HP values, the unused one in this list was either intended for a Witch Trial, or a scripted event was supposed to happen when his HP reached that threshold.
    • The enemy emfffd is not found in any other files at all, and is probably a placeholder.

One of these has a comment of マンタ体内の心臓部屋の毒液ダメージ ("Venom damage to the heart chamber inside the manta ray"). It is likely a leftover from when Insidious's heart was planned to be able to be damaged.

Phases

Leftover text exists for a variety of phases not found in the final's files.

p360, p363, and p368 would have spanned the events between Insidious's fight and the fight against Balder inside Insidious. These could be remnants from sequences seen in concept art, in which Bayonetta would descend through Insidious's esophagus and battle parasites as well as smaller versions of Insidious.

The word "mukade" ("centipede") in this section could refer to the unused skeletal Scolopendra, given the use of the word "parasite" in the skeletal Scolopendra's leftover strings, seen above. Likewise, "komanta" ("child manta") probably refers to the unused Insidiouses, em031d, em031e, and possibly even em031f.

p420 would have occurred after the end of Chapter VII, but before the beginning of Chapter IX. The strings refer to three "areas", A, B, and C, as well as a "guardian" (Golem's internal name in Bayonetta 2). Thus, this could simply be an early version of the first part of Chapter IX, which was later split into the three phases in the final (p430, p440, and p450).
