Acquired from the crumbling, bankrupt ruins of Epyx (where it was codenamed "Handy"), the Lynx was Atari's crack at the handheld market. Designed by Amiga alumni, the Lynx was technically impressive with a backlit full-color screen, but suffered from a large and clunky physical design, comically short battery life, and a tiny display resolution. (Seriously, could that screen be any smaller?)

It actually did fairly well at first, but "fairly well" wasn't much compared to the Game Boy's cultural phenomenon, and a combination of a low marketing budget, infrequent game releases, and the Game Gear conspired to cast the Lynx into irrelevance.
