Nintendo enters the 16-bit generation with the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Originally released in Japan as the Super Famicom to compete with NEC's PC Engine and Sega's Mega Drive, the Super Famicom quickly took over Japan as the most dominant video game system in the country up until the release of the Sony PlayStation. Meanwhile in America, the Super NES had fierce competition with the Sega Genesis resulting in what is widely regarded as one of the most notorious console rivalries in video game history.

The console was host to more legendary classic games than perhaps any other system, though it certainly had its share of stinkers as well.
