Games for the Game Boy that were produced without the permission or knowledge of Nintendo.
The Game Boy had no lock-out chip, but required games to contain a Nintendo logo which matched an internal copy which would be displayed onscreen at startup, similar to Sega's approach. However, Nintendo is not known to have taken action against any unlicensed company for using the logo.
Some unlicensed developers managed to replace the logo with their own, but this would sometimes break compatibility with subsequent Game Boy revisions as Nintendo updated their protection routines.
