Released in 2010, Microsoft's Windows Phone operating system was the replacement of the aging stylus-powered Windows Mobile and an ambitious attempt to prove it could still have a spot in a smartphone landscape largely dominated by Android and iOS. In later years, however, the amount of technical catch-ups needed, the lack of sufficient manufacturer support, and a lack of developer interest leading to less apps being available, meant Windows Phone wasn't able to become a sustainable mobile platform it promised to be, and Microsoft eventually decided to wind down its development in 2017.
