Hmmm...
To do:
  • Write about the differences between the Floppy and CD versions, the unused icons and whatnot in both, and the differences between the demo and final versions.
  • There's some unused dialogue, according to this script reconstruction.

What do you know about... voodoo?

Unused Graphics

Gabriel Knight: Shadow Hunter

The image on the right (File 101.p56 in the internal file list) appears to be a mockup title screen for an earlier version of the game. The subtitle, "Shadow Hunter", kinda gives away the plot, so it was probably changed because of that. Gabriel's feet were also cleaned up a bit, making them larger and giving them a better perspective.

In the normal title screen, the game draws the options on top of the image by using other game assets. But the unused screen has them applied to the artwork already. Plus there's a "Tutorial" option instead of "Exit". The final game features interactive help, but does not have a tutorial.

Land of the Green Isles

Grace, I've a feeling we're not in New Orleans any more...

File 2000.p56 in the internal file list is a picture of the starting point from King's Quest VI: Heir Today, Gone Tomorrow. This is not used in the game. Both King's Quest VI and Sins of the Fathers use Sierra's Creative Interpreter game engine, albeit in different revisions.

Early Gabriel Knight and Grace Nakamura portraits

What happened to my glorious hair?

File 8999.p56 contains the image shown above. It has early portraits for Gabriel and Grace, with Gabriel looking very un-scruffy-like.

Unused Final
Voodoo made me older! One trip to the plastic surgeon later, good as new!

Gabriel looks a bit older in the unused portrait, his hair looks a lot more manageable, and his skin tone is somewhat darker than in the final.

Unused Final
She's only smiling because she's plotting your downfall. Gabriel, looking up girl's phone numbers IS NOT RESEARCH.

Whereas Grace is smiling, has a slightly noticeable cleavage, more noticeable collar bones, and her nose, eyes, glasses, ears and hair were redone.

Easter Eggs

A couple of Easter Eggs managed to sneak in and avoid detection for a surprisingly long time.

Hmmm...
To do:
Take new screenshots of these eggs

Bayou Admonishion

Die in the bayou on Day 6. When the "I really don't want to be dead" game over screen pops up, choose to quit to DOS. As the game exits, it'll print a little something extra in the text mode display:

Thank you for playing Gabriel Knight.

Now go to bed.

Jane Scribble

This cleverly uses obfuscated script names and repurposed assets from elsewhere in the game to avoid detection!

Create a file in the game's directory named BUSTER. Now go to the Honfour at the end of the game, enter the seemingly useless office with the whiteboard, and Operate the area just below the eraser. Gabriel will walk over to the whiteboard, look around to make sure he's not being watched, and sketch out a stick figure labelled "JANE" - a tip of the hat to lead designer Jane Jensen.
