Debug Menu
When walking anywhere outside of battle, hold down Shift (or Trigger 2), then press Up, Up, Down, Down, Right, Left, Right, Left, and quickly press Space (or Trigger 1). This will unlock the debug menu. Most of the menu options don't seem to work, however.
- LEVEL - Push Right or Left key to change Tien Ren's level and Space to confirm. There seems to be a bug in the code, so this option doesn't work properly: Tien Ren's level is not changed. After pressing A button/SPACE you'll get a pitch black screen or the normal game map, but without the characters. You can use the return-to-Tien-Ren's-home spell to fix this.
- 所持金 (Money) - Push Right or Left to change the current amount of money.
- マップID (Map ID) - Switch to a map of a different area. Most locations are inaccessible, however.
- 効果音テスト (Sound test) - Push Right or Left to change the number, and then Space to play. Some numbers do not issue sound at all. This is purely for sound effects only, while the game has an actual BGM test under the regular system menu.
- ディスク移動 (Change disk) - Press Right or Left to change the disk number, then push Space. Choosing a nonexistent disk, like 0 or 9, will cause the game to reject any real disk, which means you have to shut down MSX. If you choose an existing disk and insert the disk appropriately, sometimes you are teleported to certain place in the disk, sometimes the game hangs up.
- 何処でもセーブ (Save anywhere) - Save by normal save procedure at the point Tien Ren is standing. In the original game, causes glitchy display error due to a bug on the code (hitting the ESC key will fix this).
- 何処でも回復 (Recover anywhere) - This will replenish all party members' HP and MP to recover fully. In the original game, this causes a black screen due to a bug in the code (hitting the ESC key will fix this).
- XXXXX: Does nothing. This option is not implemented in the debug menu code.
- バトル禁止 (No battles) - Enemies will block Tien Ren's path instead of initiating a battle. Tien Ren cannot simply walk through the enemies. With boss battles, a sequence that occurs after beating the boss starts playing, and the player will automatically be considered the winner of the battle.
- どこでも移動 (Go anywhere) - Allows the player to walk through walls. Beware of not crossing map borders, or you may not be able to walk back to the valid area of the map.
- 無敵モード (Invincible mode) - Will prevent HP from dropping all the way to 0 in battle, and keep it at 1 regardless of how much damage the affected party member gets.
Hidden Graphics
One of the map areas has an emoticon hidden in the upper-right corner. This is the same expression as used by the fairy in the MSX2 intro of Fray.
Unused Music
The game has a music track that goes unused in the actual game. This track is also present in the PC-98 version of the game.
