Ghostbusters: The Video Game reunites the main cast for a new story written in part by the writers of the two movies. Set in 1991 (about two years after Ghostbusters II), you play a rookie who is hired by the Ghostbusters mainly to be a guinea pig for new tech they've created, facing off against foes old and new.

The game is widely considered to be "Ghostbusters III", though the later film Ghostbusters: Afterlife kinda muddies things a bit.

A remastered port was released on PC and all current consoles in 2019.

Hmmm...
To do:
  • System differences.
  • Possible anti-piracy.
  • Alterations made in Saber Interactive's remastered version.
  • Document differences between the release build's cutscenes and the unreleased cutscenes which were found in prototype builds, detailed here on the "Ghostbusters News" website.

m00_00_egon_01.wav,Egon: I hope everyone turns off their Blackberries for this demonstration. Subatomic pulses from our equipment tend to make them explode.
m00_00_egon_02.wav,Egon: Shh. What if Bruce is listening? Comments like that could lose our gig. We're only young again in a video game, you know.
m00_00_egon_03.wav,Egon: Doubt Della Penna likes it and no WAY Marcus likes our numbers.
m00_00_egon_04.wav,Egon: It's defemation, not defecation, Ray.

m00_00_egon_06.wav,Egon: Hmmm. Back at the Sedgwick. This is a nice hotel. I'm glad to see they got everything put back together. It's pretty nostalgic, really.
m00_00_egon_07.wav,Egon: I can’t believe you let it out again. This is the 3rd time this year.
m00_00_egon_08.wav,Egon: Shutting down the containment unit for any reason is bad, Ray.
m00_00_egon_09.wav,Egon: It’s definitely here, but the reading is coming across larger than expected.
m00_00_egon_10.wav,Egon: We should spread out, cover more ground.
m00_00_egon_11.wav,Egon: Old superstition... unsubstantiated, really.

m00_00_ray_01.wav,Ray: Yeah, and not unlike the Chinese abacus curse of 1265, overuse of those things can really cause permanent damage to your thumbs.
m00_00_ray_02.wav,Ray: Video game?
m00_00_ray_03.wav,Ray: Stop it, Spengler. Terri can sue us for defecation of character and you're scaring the rookie.
m00_00_ray_04.wav,Ray: Isn't that what I said?
m00_00_ray_05.wav,Ray: And if the mechanics with our equipment still feel good, we could really be back in business here.
m00_00_ray_06.wav,Ray: He looked like he needed some fresh air, felt sorry for the little booger.
m00_00_ray_07.wav,Ray: Yeah, but it gives the rookie here a chance to get his feet wet with the live capture of a class-five full-roaming vapor! Pretty exciting!
m00_00_ray_08.wav,Ray: Yeah, I can smell him.
m00_00_ray_09.wav,Ray: All right. Egon, take the 13th floor... wait, of course there is no 13th floor.
m00_00_ray_10.wav,Ray: Right. Egon, you take the 14th floor then and I'll go down to the 11th.
m00_00_ray_11.wav,Ray: Why don’t you take this floor?
m00_00_ray_12.wav,Ray: You aren’t freezing up already are you? Get out there!

Unused Crowd AI

This snapshot from the Behind the Scenes video show the Crowd AI in the bottom of the screen.

The game was planned to have crowd AI that would have been used in the Times Square and Parade levels, and possibly in the Museum Party sequence. In GamerGuy's Reviews' video, "The Complete History of Ghostbusters: The Video Game," it was mentioned that the developers watched many movies from the 1990s to design the people in the crowd. According to the linked tech demo, each NPC is in a herding algorithm to create realistic crowds when a threat is in the area. When modding it into the Times Square level, the AI does not factor in collisions, so characters walk straight through any objects with collisions.

Unused Ghost Viewer

The game was planned to have a menu that would allow you to view the models of each ghost, either after taking a PKE scan of the ghost or completing its respective level. In the linked video, it appear to be unfinished, as it says the Beauty Queen Ghost is Pappy Sargassi. This feature was likely cut early on, because the linked textures show many beta designs, or entirely unused ghosts.

Unused textures for the ghost viewer.

Unused Music

music_times_01

This song was likely intended for Times Square, as the name implies. It is unknown why the song is unused. The song has the same melody as the Azetlor boss fight theme.

music_stay_puft_loop

This is an extended version of the Stay Puft boss fight theme. It is a mashup of the two songs from the Ghostbusters score, "We're Going to Save the World" and "Cross Rip."

music_13thfloora_loop

This song was most likely intended for the Return to Sedgewick Hotel level. For unknown reasons, the audio is in mono. The song is a mashup of multiple songs from the Ghostbusters score.

credits

This song is not unused, but it's cut off when the dialogue during the credits starts. The song is a mashup of various songs from the score of the first Ghostbusters movie.

Unused Accomp. Music

Accomp. music is short snippets of longer songs intended to accompany a short event in game. 20 out of the 34 of them in the game files are unused.

Unused Thanksgiving Day Parade Level

A whole level based on the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade was cut, but there's a lot of leftovers. While the level was cut, it's still referenced twice in the final game: the dialogue for a cutscene intended for the level was reused for the Museum level (in which the Mayor asks why his "his library, museum, and parade are all going down the toilet"), and once again in the cutscene before the Cemetery level, where the team watches an NYC news report which features footage of Blinkers in a deleted cutscene that is still unreleased.

The level would start after the Black Slime Chairman CGI cutscene, with the Ghostbusters exploring a tunnel network under the Museum. Parts of this segment are used in the final game, and new dialogue was recorded for the Chairman boss fight to take place in the tunnels. Instead of ending up in the boss arena, the ghostbusters were supposed to find a hatch, open it, and end up in the Thanksgiving Day Parade. At first, the parade would proceed as normal, but black slime would flow into Blinkers' balloon, allowing the Chairman to possess it. The Beauty Queen Ghosts, Marching Band Ghosts, Shriners, and Clowns were supposed to appear in this level, but in the final game, they only appear in multiplayer, with the exception of the Beauty Queen Ghosts. In the final game, instead of the Possessor Ghosts appearing in the Museum Party sequence, they were replaced by the Beauty Queen ghosts. The only time a Possessor Ghost appears in the final game is during the loading dock sequence.

The Ghostbusters would eventually end up in Ray's Occult Bookstore because the road ahead was blocked off. The Ghostbusters would head to the roof, where the Meson Collider was initially supposed to be introduced. Eventually, the Ghostbusters get off of the rooftops with a fire exit on a nearby apartment building, and CS PAR 06 would play. Then, the boss battle with Blinkers would begin. After the fight with Blinkers, CS PAR 07 would play. The numbers, 06 & 07, imply that there were more cutscenes planned, but these are the only leftovers in the files.

In the fourth Firehouse sequence, Ilyssa's line was supposed to be, "I saw on TV what you guys did at the parade. You're real heroes." So Peter Venkman was referring to the Parade when he said, "Kinda routine, as usual I led the charge."

This the the full line from Ilyssa in the first part of the fourth Firehouse scene.

Concept Art

Present in w32art02.pod, these would have been unlocked as you progress through the game.

Mission Objectives

These objectives start in Ray's Occult Books. Some dialogue from other levels is here mostly due to missing lines for Peter Venkman:

// Dialog is now in a separate text file

// This should only be changed by David K.

// If you need lines of dialog from other

// levels you will need to copy them directly

// rather than use an include.

Alternate, Unfinished, and Unused Cutscenes

gb01.ogv

This is a rough cut of the opening cutscene at the Museum of Natural History. The audio from this version of the cutscene was used in the Stylized version of the game. This version includes more dialogue in the commercial, and includes an additional line from Russell. The opening credits are missing during the Ecto-1B sequence, and there is an extra shot of the Ghostbusters logo on the door of the Ecto-1B.

CS FH1 01.ogv

This is an alternate opening cutscene displaying the firehouse. The firehouse has minor differences than the final version. At the end of the cutscene, an unused line from Janine Melnitz plays.

CS H1 05.ogv

This cutscene was supposed to be an intro to the Kitchen Golem boss fight in the Sedgewick Hotel level. There are no textures, and the video and audio quality is low. It is unknown why it was never finished.

gb03.ogv

This is a rough cut of the Stay Puft in Times Square cutscene. It includes additional dialogue from Peter reminiscing about Times Square's past. An additional line from Winston is played towards the end of the cutscene. Also, various unused shots appear in this cut of the scene.

CS MUS 01.ogv

This cutscene displays a news reporter named Harrison Twysack reporting on the opening of the Gozer Exhibit. The cutscene was supposed to play at the start of the Museum level, but was replaced with the second part of FH03_scene.ogv for unknown reasons.

gb05.ogv

This is a rough cut of the Museum Party cutscene. It includes an additional line from Peter, and includes various unused and alternate shots. There was supposed to be a different FMV of the Ghostbusters sneaking into the Museum at the beginning of the level, but it was never produced due to missing lines from Bill Murray, so this cutscene was produced in CGI instead, which is why it's also referred to as CS MUS 03 in the game files.

CS EXT 01.ogv

This is an alternate cutscene about the Board of Trustees. Initially, Winston was not going to explore the Museum with Venkman and the Rookie, but Ernie Hudson recorded extra lines after only a portion of his lines were recorded for this level. The cutscene's lighting is unfinished; the painting of the Board of Trustees is barely visible, and the security office is bright. At the end of the cutscene, some additional dialogue from Winston and Ray is heard.

gb06.ogv

While this rough cut of the Black Slime Chairman cutscene does not include any unused dialogue, it includes unused and alternate shots from the scene. The order of some dialogue was changed and some shots were cut short in the final version.

CS PAR 06.ogv

The cutscene that was to play before the Blinkers boss battle is still present in the game's files as CS PAR 06.ogv. The video itself appears to be a work in progress: the textures and other elements seen in the background have a low resolution, the giant Blinkers float pops into the scene near the end, and while the cutscene shows Walter Peck being vomited on by Blinkers, nothing falls on him.

Most of the dialogue and shots were reused in a cutscene that plays during the Museum level, including the Parade line, which makes no sense since there is no parade level.

The final game features the storyboards for this segment as unlockable content under Art / Miscellaneous, as pictures 43-44 and 55-64.

CS PAR 07.ogv

This cutscene was supposed to play at the end of the Thanksgiving Day Parade level after capturing Blinkers. Most of the shots and dialogue were reused in the concluding cutscene of the Museum level.

gb08.ogv

This rough cut of the Travel to Lost Island cutscene includes additional dialogue about the Ecto-8 and various unused, alternate, and extended shots.

CS LI 02.ogv

This is a sketch of the cutscene when the Ghostbusters are separated on Shandor Island. Alternate dialogue is heard that was used in the Stylized version. The Cultist ghosts appear because they were supposed to be the main enemies of both Shandor Island and Central Park Cemetery, but were cut from Shandor Island for unknown reasons.

gb09.ogv

This is a rough cut of the Escape from Lost Island cutscene. While no additional dialogue is included, there are a few unused and alternate shots.

gb10.ogv

This is a rough cut of the Central Park Cemetery intro cutscene. While no additional dialogue is heard, there are some unused and alternate shots, such as the ghost chase at the beginning of the cutscene.

gb11.ogv

This a rough cut of the Mayor Revealed cutscene. There's no additional dialogue, but there are some unused, extended, and alternate shots.

gb12.ogv

This is a rough cut of the ending cutscene. Some deleted and extended shots are present here, and some additional lines are heard. The Ecto-1B appears in the final shot, but it disappears for unknown reasons in the final version.

Unused Cutscene Dialogue

Hmmm...
To do:
Reformat this with tables.

Some of the test cutscenes included additional dialogue, but not all recorded dialogue was used. Some of these lines were used in the Stylized version of the game. This section includes cut dialogue not included in any test cutscenes.
