Debugging Functions

Elementary, my dear Cactus.
This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: There's another debug variable, DebugMenuItem, which doesn't seem to do anything when adjusted.

The file Game.ini contains two variables, DebugMenu and ShowVersion, which enable/disable in-game debugging functions. The best way to activate them is to open the ROM with a hex editor, then head to address 24DA00 and replace their zeroes with ones.

Debug Menu (and Free Movement)

After being enabled, the debug menu can be accessed via an option on the bottom-right corner of the level select screen. Left and Right change the selected level, while Up and Down move the menu's cursor.

  • Test Level: Play the selected level. This option allows for a otherwise-inaccessible test level to be played (see below for more information).
  • Unlock All: Unlocks every level, spell, and item in the game. This option will not add all coins and orbs to the current game.
  • Back: Return to the level select screen.

In addition, enabling the debug menu will also enable a free movement mode. Pressing L while in a level will allow the player to freely move Hugo around, and pressing it again turns the mode off.

Version Info

Once activated, the game's version number, current language, and product code will appear on the bottom portion of the top screen.

Test Level

A test level, Level17.plf, can be accessed through the debug menu's level select. It's a copy of the first level in the game, The Village, but with various hazards, objects, and enemies placed throughout for testing purposes. For whatever reason, the coin and orb counters display a maximum count of zero each, even though all of them are present in the level.
