Legion - Spinner-87 is a shooter with splitting paths, a ship that can be upgraded with up to four stationary shooters (the titular legion), and "time bombs" that allow the player to rewind time for 1 second, even after death!

Debug Menus

A hidden debug menu can be accessed in this game (and other games using the Nichibutsu Legion hardware) through the following method:

  1. Turn the Service Mode dip switch on.
  2. Hold 2P Up + Button 1 + Button 2.
  3. Keep those buttons held and turn Service Mode off.

Let's count to Debug Screen 4!!!
This is a simple test of the character graphics ROM.

  • 1P Start: Go to next test.
  • 1P Left/Right: Change palette number.
  • 1P Up/Down: Change graphics ROM offset.

Debug Screen 2
This is a slightly more complicated test of the object graphics ROM.

  • 1P Start: Go to next test.
  • 1P Left/Right: Change palette number.
  • 1P Up/Down: Change graphics ROM offset.
  • 2P Left/Right: Alters the "CHG" value, used for palette cycling effects.

Debug Screen 3
A vertically scrolling test of every stage in the game.

  • 1P Start: Go to next test.
  • 1P Button 1: Toggles scrolling.
  • 2P Start: Speeds up scrolling (20 pixels per second).

Debug Screen 4
This is a separate display test for every foreground and background block in the game. These are organized in 200 byte-sized banks, with background blocks starting at 0800.

  • 1P Start: Go to character graphics ROM test.
  • 1P Left/Right: Changes current foreground/background block bank.
  • 1P Up/Down:: Changes current foreground/background block.
