Hmmm...
To do:
Document the GamesCom and review prototypes.

Mario and Sonic's second Olympic outing, where they participate in the XXI Olympic Winter Games Vancouver 2010 with more advanced graphics, some party games and a festival mode.

Sub-Pages

Miscellaneous tidbits that are interesting enough to point out here.
Notes

Unused Events

While there are not as many unused events this time around compared to its summer counterpart, it still hosts quite a fair bit of references to planned events that didn't make the final cut.

Dream Speed Skating (City Escape)

Dream Speed Skating is the most complete out of the unused events. Pretty much everything related to this event is left intact in the game's files, except for the environment the event takes place in.

Vehicles

Other Unused Events

In addition to Dream Speed Skating, four other events were supposed to make the cut, but were scrapped entirely. No remnants of these events still reside in the game's filesystem.

In lua/sequence/OneMatch.lua resides a list of every event that can be selected. Among the entries are...

Internal Event Name
FigureSkatePairs
MiniSnowmobileRace
MiniRafting
MiniHangGlider

Note that Dream Gliding is referred to internally as MiniHangGliderDream, so it is unknown if MiniHangGlider is supposed to be a regular Olympic event (even though Hang Gliding is not an actual Winter Olympic Event), or if it is an unused variant of Dream Gliding.

Unused Character Viewer

A character viewer can be found in the game. It is controlled by the file CharacterViewer.rso, found in /rso.

It includes many options to view the character models and animations, along with many additional settings. For example, there is an option that renders a ball that characters can look at, another option to move the character alongside a grid (which can be manipulated in various ways), etc.
When selecting an option press B (or sometimes +) to go back to the previous menu.

To access this menu, the aforementioned .rso file must be replaced with another used one. For example, replacing said file with "Town.rso" under the same directory will make this menu appear when selecting the "Shopping" option in the main menu.

Unused Maps

Test Map

A test map can be found in /sample/level00, with many halfpipes and numbered block structures.

Unused Graphics

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (2008) Leftover Icons

jointCharaIcon.tls contains the player icons from the first Mario & Sonic game, though there are also blank placeholders for the new playable & rival characters in the sheet too. They show up as a dark Mario silhouette with their Japanese names overlayed.

Scrapped Nintendo WFC Match Mode Graphics

The game at some point in development was planned to have online multiplayer capabilities through Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Unfortunately, it was never finished in time, and the game would only use Nintendo WFC for online leaderboards. It would not be until Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games where Worldwide Versus would be a playable mode, although it was limited to only four events. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 would finally introduce online play for all events.

Remnants of this mode still exists within the game's files. The UI graphics are among these, with the text even being translated for all languages.

Unused Audio

Announcer Voice Clips

There are a lot of unused announcer voice clips for various modes and features in the game that did not make the final cut.

Below are some various voice clips of the announcer announcing the unused Wi-Fi Connection Match Mode.

SE_VO_ANO_319_NINTENDO_WFC_MATCH.adx

SE_VO_ANO_320_NINTENDO_WIFI_CONECYION_MATCH.adx
(Yes, the "CONNECYION" typo is intentional, that is how it is referred to in the header file for se_voice_eng.)

Additionally, there are fourteen unused announcer clips placed subsequently after another. It is unknown what these voice clips would be used for, though they all do describe a type of game to play.

(Interestingly, Adventure Tours is the name of the story mode for the Nintendo DS version, so it could be possible that it was planned at some point for the Wii version too.)

There are also three voice clips of what seem to be early names for Party Mode.
