Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is a paid demo stand-alone prologue to the later-released Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Set a few months after the events of Peace Walker, Big Boss is called back into action once again to save his young subordinate Chico, as well as former ally-turned-double agent Paz, from a U.S. Naval prison facility in Cuba, which sets forth a chain of events that sets up the plot for The Phantom Pain.

After completing the main mission (which only takes an hour at most), a set of side-ops are unlocked afterward, all taking place in the same Naval base, in an attempt to stretch out what would've otherwise been an actual prologue in a fuller game. This includes a pair of hidden extra-ops that pay homage to previous games in the series, featuring some allusions to the internal struggles within Konami that led to Kojima's departure from the company a year later.

Hmmm...
To do:
E V E R Y T H I N G!!! Sounds, graphics, notes section, prerelease section, possibly more Phantom Pain related leftovers, etc.

Unused Sounds

All of the sounds in Ground Zeroes are stored in .sbp files, or Sound Banks.

Snake - vox_player_common Sound Bank

  • All of these grunts are used in the hospital scene at the beginning of The Phantom Pain. These are the sound effects that Snake makes while struggling to get through after waking up from his 9-year coma.
  • "HQ." You can't visit Mother Base in Ground Zeroes, so this is unused.
  • "Mother Base!" ...along with this one. It's unknown what these two clips would belong to, other than it being a Phantom Pain carryover.
  • "Pick up!"
  • "On the ground!"
  • "Request Chopper."
  • "Lie to them."
  • "Respond."

Regional Differences

Surgical Scene

The Japanese version shows the bomb extraction scene at the end of the main mission from a different angle in order to obscure Paz's exposed organs.

Additional Briefing Tapes

There's a set of five additional briefing tapes in the Japanese version of the game in a folder titled Peace and Kazuhira Blues. These are portions from a previously-released Peace Walker drama album of the same name, which details the first meeting between Big Boss and Kazuhira Miller in a series of tracks titled "First Encounter". Since the Japanese version supports English subtitles, these are fully translated within the game.
