Unused Music

MyBurdenIsDead.ogg

An alternate menu theme that was used in the freeware version of game - it played in the main menu after "killing Niko" (closing the game without going to bed after solving the remote puzzle).
Despite this ending being removed, this track still remains in the game's files.

TheTower2.ogg TheTower.ogg (Used)

A variant of TheTower.ogg with the ending slightly changed.

30 Factory.ogg Factory.ogg (Used)

A variant of Factory.ogg with the fading sound at the end being cut. Added at some point after the release.

mines maybe.ogg

Judging by the name, this track is related to the Barren mines. Maybe.
Added in the Solstice update.

ambience.ogg ambience2.ogg ambience3.ogg "Out of Protocol" (ambience4.ogg)

There are 4 "ambience" tracks in the game's files, but only the fourth one (ambience4.ogg, also known as "Out of Protocol" in the Solstice OST) is used in-game.
It's possible that these are just progress snapshots. ambience3.ogg and ambience4.ogg sound very similar. All 4 were added in the Solstice update.

DeepMines.ogg DeepMinesPiano.ogg (Used)

A variant of "Vestige" (DeepMinesPiano.ogg) without a piano accompaniment. Both were added in the Solstice update and are unused at original speed.

Collapse_loop.ogg Collapse.ogg (Used)

A variant of Collapse.ogg without the high pitched piano part. Both were added in the Solstice update.

AviateOld.ogg Aviator.ogg (Used)

An older version of "Aviator". Reused as a bonus track in the Solstice OST as "First Flight". Both were added in the Solstice update.

Unused Sounds

teleport_boop.wav

This background sound was supposedly planned to be used for a long teleportation sequence in the Tower.

item_get_cut_off.wav

A copy of item_get.wav in the Music Effects folder. Was presumably supposed to play when you get the novelty T-shirt from Magpie.

clippers.wav

The sound effect that was played when Niko used clippers to cut the vines blocking passage to the Refuge in the (now unused and half-functional) GDC Demo tutorial room.

fade_in.wav

A variant of the commonly used transition sound effect without the echo effect.

phone_dialtone.wav

phone_outgoing.wav

Unused versions of used Music Effects with the same names in the Sound Effects folder.

robot_spin.wav

A variant of the sound effect played when a Prophetbot spins.

step_splash2.wav

step_splash3.wav

step_splash4.wav

step_splash5.wav

step_splash6.wav

These sound effects are supposedly prototypes for the Tower water maps' stepping sounds. step_splash4.wav is longer than the others. It might be the source sound for the "splash" and "boat" step sounds.

step_tile_echo.wav

A bell sound effect. Possibly used for testing step sounds?

tick.wav

tock.wav

These sound effects were used for the Solstice countdown, and subsequently became unused when the countdown completed. It might be posible to restart the countdown by changing system time/date to the time before solstice update. The World Machine Edition reintroduced these sounds: in the Solstice chapter, the clock is counting up to the new year.

robot_room.mp3

A satisfying combination of beeps and boops. Two copies of this sound exist: in the Background Sounds folder and in the Sound Effects folder. Both were added in the Solstice update.

square-death - Copy.wav

A possibly work-in-progress variant of the square-death.wav sound effect. Added in the Solstice update.

wheel_squeak.wav

A wheel squeak. Possibly an early step sound for the minecart? Added in the Solstice update.

Unused Playable Characters

Niko and NPC followers were implemented mostly through RPG Maker's hero team/actors system. Overall there's 8 "heroes" with same default parameters but different names and sprites. Silver follower was implemented as a couple of npc with collision per map. Unused "Silver" follower uses "blue_npc_silver" sprites. "invisible" follower has no sprite and appears to be unused. Both have existed since the release version.

Unused Items

ID Graphic Name Description Use Notes
045
OneShot-Item red photo.png
photo of Niko Not a cat! Can be used like the other photo items to complete the Library Card subquest. Combining with sticky library card will additionally remove (non-sticky) Kip's library card and sticky photo. The old photo item used before the multiple photos feature was added. Displayed much higher in the inventory than any other photo because items are sorted by their ID. No longer obtainable.
049 None boots These boots will make it possible to move quickly. None Leftover equipment item from freeware version. Gave Niko constant running speed. Replaced by the Walk Faster key and by Default movement option in the settings menu.
054
OneShot-Item debug save.png
DEBUG SAVE USE THIS TO SAVE Can be used to Save up to 4 or 100 backups and Load to any one of them. Choosing Real Load or exiting the Load menu will result in loading the latest autosave/checkpoint.
Each save file has an indicator of the time and date of its creation, an indicator of the save's total playtime and a horizontal row of actor sprites of up to 4 team members on that save (if Memory mode is currently active Entity Niko replaces all Nikos displayed in all Saves).
Didn't exist in freeware. If the debug tester mode is active it's gonna appear in your inventory at the start of every run.

None None Added with the Solstice chapter. According to the developers, Rue, Cedric and Prototype at one point of development were supposed to give 3 keys to help solve a puzzle.[1]

This puzzle was possibly an early version of the "BigPortal" puzzle, where the trio themselves are the keys (more precisely, text files named keyR.txt, keyG.txt and keyB.txt).
