Early Development

Early Concept Art

Fred Dee, one of the game's artists, posted in his portfolio a variety of character concept art he drew, ranging from October 2002 to January 2003.
These designs were made to give the developers an idea of what type of characters to create, back when the game's cast had not been decided yet.

The following artworks were not listed on the actual page but could be seen by changing the URL.

(Source: Fred Dee)

Later Concept Art

These character sketches, which would eventually be used as the comic book aesthetic background seen on the game's menus, were drawn by Steven Olds and would be what the characters would be modeled after and give the game its unique look.[12]

Only a handful of these sketches were publicly shown, being in the menu's background as well as in the comic book that came with the game's Special Edition. These designs mostly differ from what they would look like in the final game.

2005

E3 2005

Bully's lavender bus, with the game's early logo.

Rockstar Games had a booth with different buses, each themed after a specific game.
Bully had two, in which only a few press reviewers were allowed to enter, where they got to see a demo of the game.

Bully GameInformer Scan1.jpg Bully GameInformer Scan2.jpg

A GameInformer Magazine article was written detailing what was witnessed in the E3 demo.

  • The boys' dorm's common room had a Darts minigame.
  • Prefects appeared in the boys' dorm, just like how some of the female faculty appear in the girls' dorm.
  • The description of the mission Weed Killer shows how different it was, being more in line with the leftover dialogue.

Scrapped Xbox Version

The Xbox box art, still hosted on IGN's website.
It uses the game's early logo and Bullworth crest.

The Xbox version mentioned in the game's initial announcement was quietly canceled for unknown reasons and stopped being mentioned when the game started being marketed again in 2006.

Trailers

A Microcosm For The Whole World

Trailer - A Microcosm For The Whole World

Published on August 11th, 2006.

  • The Bullworth crest can be seen on all students. In the final game, it was replaced with the shield variant.
  • (0:00) The exterior of the main school building has differences:
  • Fake shadows can be seen attached to the building. In the final game, they only appear at night.
  • Some of the Final Showdown roof props aren't present in this trailer.
The props are likely there in the final game due to an oversight, as all the others are only loaded during that mission.
  • (0:04) The interior of the main school building has differences:
  • The removed third floor can be seen.
  • The lobby doesn't seem to be as connected to the hallways as in the final game, with walls blocking the way instead.
  • The staircase leading to the second floor is different. This old design can still be seen in one of the unused exit image graphics.
Trailer Final
BullySchoolMainBuildingInteriorTrailer1.png BullySchoolMainBuildingInteriorFinal.png
  • (0:08) Jimmy's face is slightly different, having his older, slightly meaner-looking face texture.
  • (0:10) Angie isn't wearing her glasses.
  • (0:12) The school's parking lot area has differences:
  • An archway is present, with an extra lamp on the left and 2 trash cans.
  • The bench is using the same model used throughout the entire academy. In the final game, it uses a different model.
Trailer Final
BullySchoolParkingLotTrailer1.png BullySchoolParkingLotFinal.png
  • (0:25) The boys' dorm has differences:
  • A garbage can hardly be seen in the recreation room between the entrance and the arcade machine, in the final game it got moved next to the poker table.
  • The entrance to the stairway leading to the removed second floor is present but can sadly barely be seen due because of two students blocking the view.
  • The sofa at the end of the hallway isn't there.
  • Pedro can be seen. As evidenced by unused pajama models of both him and Sheldon, they were meant to spawn here.
  • (0:33) The book Earnest reads is different.
Trailer Final
Bully Prerelease TheBigGameCutscene.png Bully Final TheBigGameCutscene.png
  • (0:37) The intro cutscene of The Setup is taking place inside the school's main building on the second floor. While it got moved outside, the background noise was not updated.
  • (0:39) The stripe on the back of Jimmy's Bullworth Vest has a red part. In the final game, it's entirely yellow.
  • (0:44-0:46) Some differences can be spotted in the cutscene of The Gym is Burning:
  • Jimmy's head doesn't move. It seems that the animations for the cutscene were not finished.
  • Christy and Constantinos are positioned differently.
  • The bench by the pool building is longer.
  • The UV map of the wall on the right is different.
Trailer Final
BullyTheGymIsBurningIntroCutsceneTrailer1-1.png BullyTheGymIsBurningIntroCutsceneTrailer1-2.png BullyTheGymIsBurningIntroCutsceneFinal-1.png BullyTheGymIsBurningIntroCutsceneFinal-2.png
  • (0:48) There are some differences in the cafeteria cutscene of This Is Your School:
  • Gord is present along with the other preps.
  • The camera position was tweaked to account for his removal.
  • The cafeteria area was tweaked a bit:
  • The UV mapping on the wall is different.
  • The fruit basket is very different and is possibly not a fruit basket at all.
Trailer Final
BullyCafeteriaCutsceneTrailer1.png BullyCafeteriaCutsceneFinal.png
  • (0:51) The intro cutscene of Movie Tickets has some differences:
  • The people in the queue are different, and the presence of Dorsey matches up with the characters Jimmy originally had to distract, as evidenced by unused dialogue.
  • The theatre uses different textures, resembling the closed-down ones in Bullworth Town, and the kiosk had a clear glass texture.
  • (0:57) The scene with Dr. Crabblesnitch is from an earlier version of the Welcome to Bullworth cutscene with him, which can partially be found in the game, unused.
  • (1:00) The texture at the bottom of the skateboard was different, showing a yellow lightning bolt with orange sides. In the final game, it has a simpler design, showing a red stripe with blue sides.

Everyone At Bullworth Is So Mean

  • As the footage was taken at different points in development, the students can be seen in some clips with either the crest on their uniforms or the shield symbols.
  • (0:29) Beatrice can be seen hitting the fire alarm during the mission Panty Raid instead of Melody.
  • (0:46) The frisbee is blue instead of red.

  • (0:43) Two seconds are shown of the intro cutscene of the scrapped Chemical Deliveries mission (later renamed Discreet Deliveries in Scholarship Edition).

Holiday Special Trailer

Trailer - Holiday Special

Published on December 13th, 2006. Despite coming out almost 2 months after the game's release, this trailer contains content not present in the final game.

  • (0:25) A second can be seen of the intro cutscene of the scrapped mission The Collector.
  • (0:29)/(0:38) Bits of the intro cutscene of the scrapped mission The Paddle can be seen and heard, it's still partially present in the game's files.
  • (0:43) When Jimmy is hit, the Scholarship Edition-only quote Jimmy_BIO_001_v4 plays, likely edited in post.

TV Ads

(0:17) An extra second of the intro cutscene of The Paddle can be seen, showing a little bit more of Gary's animation during his "young love" speech.
The clip ends exactly where the clip used in the Holiday Special trailer starts.

Soundtrack Score

Welcome To Bullworth

Before Scholarship Edition added it as the title screen theme, it was only present on all of the game's soundtrack albums but not in the game itself.

Go Kart Race 2

Included in iTunes and eMusic's versions of the score is this track which, while it is in the game, goes unused.

Carnival Funhouse Graveyard

This was included in MTV's URGE music platform and as a bonus track for the ARTISTdirect version of the game's score.
Judging by the name, it was meant for the graveyard room during the mission Funhouse Fun.

Post-release Interviews

  • Mike Skupa, one of the design directors, mentioned that before deciding on an original soundtrack, the developers experimented with licensed music and Jimmy once carried a music player.[13]

"After a few attempts at licensed tracks [one build had Jimmy carrying a steampunk looking music player], it became clear that we had to use an instrumental score."

— Mike Skupa
  • According to Jeronimo Barrera, one of the producers, a Grottos and Gremlins arcade minigame was almost finished but got scrapped as the developers didn't have enough time to complete it.[14]
  • When asked about the boys' dorm's second floor, environment artist Andrew Wood mentioned how things needed to be cut due to a lack of time and resources. He also mentioned an underground area as big as the entire map that was scrapped entirely.[15]

"When Bully started, it was an eight person Env team, by the third year in on production, it was just down to myself and Jae Lee. Things needed to go."

— Andrew Wood

Dennis Opel

Hmmm...
To do:
  • Restructure where needed.
  • Add descriptions for better context and to avoid media dumps.
  • Check what's still left or scrapped and mention that.
  • Add the rest.

Dennis Opel was one of the animators who mainly made animations for the game's fighting styles. He was left uncredited due to leaving development before the game was finished.
He posted videos on his X social media showcasing some of his work.

A good chunk of his work was either scrapped or toned down, as per the Vancouver team's direction to simplify the combat.

Miscellaneous
A backhand punch move for the jocks.
It did not make it into the final game.
A concept of how the boxing minigame should function.
Opel mentioned how these proposed mechanics
were inspired by Punch-Out!!.
Various countermove attacks. A Dim Mak attack.
It did not make it into the final game.
The charged punch that Preppies do in the boxing minigame. The first was reworked into Russell's powerbomb
while the second is the powerbomb done by jocks.
A two-hit combo.
Heavy Attacks
Grapple-related
A successful grapple and first punch. Grapple attempts and first punch. Another view of the first grapple punch. Various grapple sequences, such as
pushes, the unused wrestling choke,
struggles and an evade for the first punch.
Grapple punches, evades and pushes. A leg takedown for the greasers,
followed by what looks like a reversal.
Two different views of the greasers' leg takedown. Reversal of a greaser grapple.
Ground and pound sequence, followed by an armbar. Same ground and pound sequence as the previous. A ground combo. Animation of the first mount punch, which goes unused.
A knee grapple. What Opel called "Fireman Grapple". A ground head smash attack. A two-hit grapple combo.
Humiliations
The ground spit.
The final cut out several frames before and after the spit.
An animation Opel said was made when
the developers were experimenting with finisher movies.

Fighting Mechanics Overhaul Pitch

Opel dedicated some of his time into reworking the fighting mechanics to be more complex than what they ended up being, and made a video for it to pitch to the team.
While he never did, he asserts Rockstar Games would've likely been interested in them.

To do:
This is too messy on the average 1080p and lower screens.

Sota Yuyama

Sota Yuyama worked on the game as an animator. He was left uncredited due to him leaving the development before the game was finished. In 2008 he published multiple videos on Vimeo showing some of his work on the game.

Melvin

A video showcasing the Fat Nerd style.

  • The only animation from this video that remains (but unused) in the final game is the standing idle, but is slightly different.
  • The 2 Hit Combo was reworked, but the animations still use the early names that don't match with what they actually are in the final game (eg. The shoulder attack is still called AssThrust).
  • The Belly Bump was removed. Its existence indicates that the fat nerds would've been able to grapple, which they can't do in the final game.

Boss Russell

A video showcasing Russell's Boss style.

  • The Power Move was removed from the style, and it was given to the Dropouts.
  • The Charging Headbutt's charging animation was changed: the leg revving up part after Russell hits the ground was altered to him repeating the ground hit a second time.

Bully - Greaser Boss Johnny Move Set

A video showcasing Johnny's Boss style.

According to Sota, the original concept for Johnny was that he was pretty cocky, so he would only use kicks to fight until his health drained a certain amount and would then stop holding back.
This behavior is not shown in the video itself.

"This is from the project Bully. These are the move sets for one of the Boss in Greaser Faction Johnny. Original design was that he was too cool to use his hands to fight, so I made him like a Tae Kwon Do fighter. Art direction has changed half way through and lots of the move didn't get into game [...]"

  • The 3 Hit Combo was removed entirely.
  • The 3 Hit Combo Grapple was altered: in the final game, it has Johnny perform 2 punches followed by his axe kick, rather than kicking his opponent. Said axe kick also seems to have been mirrored.
  • The Power Move was removed.
  • The Clear Move is unused but fully functional.

Bully - Main Player Strike Combo

A video showcasing Jimmy's style.

  • The 5 Hit Combo's second punch's animation is unused, while the fourth punch's animation was changed a bit.
  • The Power Move from 2nd Hit Combo's animation is used in the final game by peds as a harassment move.
  • The Fully Charged Power Move From 2nd Hit's charging animation was replaced by another (unused) one.
  • The Fully Charged Power Move from 3rd Hit's both charging and the actual kick animations were changed quite a bit.

Tyler Wilson

Hmmm...
To do:
Comparison screenshots.

Tyler Wilson was the game's senior character artist. His portfolio had renders of his modeling work of the game's characters, which were eventually removed but later re-uploaded to an Imgur gallery.

The images show earlier, more exaggerated character designs and are more accurate recreations of the concept art by Steven Olds, before being redesigned by Jared Fry.

Note that the last two images were published in the portfolio later, hence the different watermarks and lack of description.

Concept Final
BullyTylerWilson-quarterback.jpg Placeholder.png

Kirby's football model, labeled "Quarterback version of someone".

  • The football uniform was very different, most notably the numbers were smaller and had the actual Bullworth symbol instead of the name being written in letters. The footwear was also actual football shoes instead of sports sneakers.
  • His uniform had the number 0 instead of 11.
  • One of his legs was more exposed than the other and he had a cut in his right leg.
  • One of his socks was pulled up more than the other.
Concept Final
BullyTylerWilson-seth.jpg Placeholder.png

Seth, labeled "Seth an early perfect concept".

  • He had long grown-out sideburns.
  • He wore rings.
Concept
BullyTylerWilson-sid.jpg

Labeled "Sid the punk". A rather curious case given how no student of short stature with a muscular build is in the final game, and interestingly his mohawk was later repurposed as a hairstyle for Jimmy but ended up not being used! He can be seen in the Bully comics.

Concept Final
BullyTylerWilson-zoe.jpg Placeholder.png

  • She had a collar with a lock in it and what seems like a Bullworth tie hanging on it, which got removed.
