This page details prerelease information and/or media for Chicken Invaders.

An unfinished and unreleased prototype of Chicken Invaders was made in 1997 for DOS, coded with Borland C++. It has since been lost, with InterAction Studios only still having the title screen.

It's very different from the later games. It was never completed, and as such it's missing a lot of features. It, however, started the franchise and many of its concepts, and some of its code still remains in the Ultra VGA Engine to this day.

Two versions of this prototype existed: the DOS version and the Java version (which was even more incomplete).

Differences

  • The starfield was different and static (doesn't scroll).
  • Sprites were pixel art instead of being 3D rendered.
    • Chickens were much smaller and had larger beaks. They also only had three frames of animation (wings up, side, down).
  • The player controlled a handgun instead of a spaceship.
  • Missiles, power-ups, and Asteroids did not exist.
  • The player's weapon only had one power level.
  • Food wasn't collectible.
  • Much less waves.
  • Waves did not repeat forever.
  • No music played during the game.
  • The logo was slightly different.
  • Only one sound could play at a time.
  • The game's resolution was 320×200 instead of 640×480.

Trivia

  • The Java version lacked a lot of features from the BC++ version, as back then Java was just starting as a language and it wasn't powerful enough for decent animation.
  • The starfield used in this game was an upside-down version of one of the space backgrounds present in Radar Wars Arcade.
