Prerelease:Friday Night Funkin'

From The Cutting Room Floor
Jump to navigation Jump to search

This page details prerelease information and/or media for Friday Night Funkin'.

Unlike many other web games, Friday Night Funkin' has made its source code public. This allows internet weirdos, such as us, to dig into the files and see what the developers intended or just jokingly included in there.

And you were just a scroll away from being fired too...
Oh dear, I do believe I have the vapors.
This page contains content that is not safe for work or other locations with the potential for personal embarrassment.
Such as: Doodle of PhantomArcade (Games Artist) telling an unused content YouTuber to do phallic things to his mother and gore.
Hmmm...
To do:
  • Check for anything interesting in the digital art book for the game.
  • Week 4 has graphics for the Henchman getting torn for pieces, intended for the unused lamppost mechanic.
  • Older commits for the Week 7 update have early graphics for Pico on the speakers in which the shooting effects are yellow instead of blue.

Unused Graphics

Ape/Kiddbrute

FNF Ape FNF.png

kiddbrute (referred to here as Ape), a character designed by kiddbrute, was originally intended to make a small appearance as an Easter egg in the game. According to kiddbrute, this graphic was set to rarely appear when the game was booted, which explains the absurd resolution that the image is rendered in. After realizing the rapid popularity the game was garnering, he requested that his character be removed completely.

While it doesn't appear that this Easter egg was ever programmed in, the graphic for it was added to the GitHub repository on November 2, 2020, and later removed on January 13, 2021. The file was assets/images/ape_FNF.png.

Luckyboy

FNF-LuckyGuitar.png

This character, named "Lucky", is a cartoon depiction of Lucky from this short film and was added to the GitHub repository on November 10, 2020; commit 40f0edf18e33e59719d4a4d75ec46c5eea55bea2. While it is uncertain who drew him given that his art style differs drastically from the rest of the game's, it was likely BrandyBuizel, since he was also the one to first push it to the repository. He has attack and tumble animations like Boyfriend, and he also has an associated song.

Luckyboy's spritesheet was removed from the game's assets folder on December 17, 2020; commit cfeaf5cbc64d6bf89cb1313819ca4131cdcb2d66, before the release of Version 0.2.5. According to NinjaMuffin, LuckyBoy wasn't planned to be part of the game, he had no part in the addition of his sprite files, and he was removed from the assets folder for this reason.

Most of the original assets and code can be found here.

The commit also contains two strings of PNG files which can be put together to produce two animations. Note that neither of these animations exist by name in the associated XML file (lucky_tumble is not mapped at all, and lucky_plays_guitar uses less frames than there are present on the sheet), so they could just be mockups.

Beetle Ninja

Evilsk8r.png

Concept art discovered on a blog operated by a collaborator of Evilsk8r in which a character, called "Beetle Ninja" is teased for the game. Beetle Ninja is unique in that he is the only character hinted for the game to not originate from Newgrounds, having first appeared in an RPGMaker game of the same name.

Character Sketches

FNF-Character sketches.png

A series of sketches for various characters, including:

  • Artwork and images of Pico, likely used as references.
  • Sketches for Pico and his expressions.
  • An early concept of Pico's microphone originally being held in his gun.
  • Buggy the Bug, a character made by evilsk8r that would later cameo in Week 5's background.
  • Tankman.
  • kiddbrute.
  • Skid & Pump.

Girlfriend

art/flashFiles/GF_assets.fla

FNF-GFCryingFace.PNG

A face texture contained in the .fla file GF_Assets containing three Girlfriend sprites that sit atop an unfinished podium (as confirmed by Johnny Utah in this video by DidYouKnowGaming?). This was likely made around the Ludum Dare prototype or a very early build of the game, as in that build the same placeholder podium can be seen. However, similar sprites of Girlfriend crying do show up when you lose a streak and in Week 7 when Tankman insults her.

(Source: Johnny Utah, DidYouKnowGaming?)

art/flashFiles/GF_ass_sets.fla

FNF GF faceplant.gif

An animation of Girlfriend faceplanting into the ground. Perhaps this would've played after Pico knocked her off of the speakers in Week 7 with Boyfriend not catching her. More evidence towards this is the fact that the soil and particles are orange, like the ground in Week 7.

Week 1 - Daddy Dearest

Daddy Dearest

FridayNightFunkin-DaddyDearestKick.png

A unused sprite of Daddy Dearest kicking something, likely Boyfriend. Posted by PhantomArcade on Twitter.

Week 2 - Spooky Month

art/flashFiles/spooky_kids_assets.fla

FNF spookez hey.png

An unused pose for Skid & Pump. According to PhantomArcade in a tweet, this pose was intended to be a parallel to Boyfriend's V-Sign pose, occurring when a vocal cue is heard in a song (like with Bopeebo). He would go on to say that one of the Week 2 tracks was supposed to have those cues, but he didn't want to pressure Kawaisprite to include it. His tweet also mentions that this feature was intended for all the other opponents, although this is the only remnant of it we see.

A reference image for Skid & Pump, taken directly from Sr Pelo's It's Spooky Month.

FridayNightFunkin-SpookyKids-IdleDance-Sketch.gif

An animation sketch for their idle dance. Oddly, Boyfriend's head shows up for two frames.

FNF spookez down sketch.png

A sketch for their left pose. Weirdly enough, the internal name in the .fla file for this sketch is "down sketch".

FNF spookez right sketch.png

A sketch for their right pose.

FNF spookez up sketch.png

A sketch for their up pose.

FNF spookez down sketch 1.png FNF spookez down sketch 2.png

Two sketches for their down pose. The first one would later be touched up and used, while the second one is an alternate version of the first sketch with Pump's eyes open.

FNF spooky kids sketch color.png

A touched-up version of a sketch seen in the Character Sketches sheet.

Week 3 - Pico

FNF pico gun forward sketch.png

A sketch of Pico's gun facing forward.

Week 4 - Mommy Must Murder

art/flashFiles/Mom_Assets.fla

FNF cory left pose sketch.png

A sketch of Mommy Mearest's left note animation. The name of this file calls the mom "Cory".

FNF left post sketch.png

Strangely, this file is named "left_post_sketch" despite it being her right animation frame.

FNF Stan doodle.png

A sketch of one of the Nightmare Cops from Tom Fulp's upcoming game of the same name. This character later reappeared in the background of Week 5.

Stalker lover concept 1.png

A concept doodle for a crazed stalker. Possibly could've been used in the background, but a similar concept for crazed stalkers could be found in Week 6.

FNF Moe concept 1.png

What looks to be concept art for another crazed stalker.

FNF Evil stalkers.png

More crazed stalkers in the Mom's .fla file. PhantomArcade stated in a livestream that, due to these characters being used frequently in mods and having been discussed by YouTuber TetrabitGaming, they will not appear in the full game.

FNF Boyfried dooodle.png

A sketch of Boyfriend and some of his opponents.

FNF Boyfriend on phone doodle.png

A sketch of Boyfriend playing something on his smartphone.

FNF Doodles.png

Various sketches of the creators of the game.

FNF BF HEY!! Hair Blowing.gif

The "Hey!" animation from Bopeebo can be found in Boyfriend's Week 4 .fla.

FNF BF hit hair blowing.gif

The unused hit animation can be found in Boyfriend's hair blowing .fla.

Week 5 - Red Snow

Concept Art

Week5 conceptart.png

Week5 concept1.png

Week5 conceptart2.png

Concept art dumped on the Friday Night Funkin' wiki reveals that week 5 was initially very different: focusing on an escalator gimmick and various enemies rather than featuring Mommy Mearest and Daddy Dearest, who do not appear at all in concept art for the level.

A character called Rolus from the game Rolus in the Outskirts is featured prominently throughout concept art, revealing he may have originally played a significant role in week 5.

Animations

art/flashFiles/BoyFriend_Assets_CHRISTMAS_VARIANT.fla

FNF BF hit Christmas.gif

The unused hit animation in Christmas form.

BF idle shaking Christmas.gif

The animation that was supposed to play during Week 2, when lightning strikes. Only the right arm is changed to fit with the Christmas theme.

FNF BF pre attack Christmas.gif

Boyfriend preparing his attack in the Christmas theme. Only the feet are changed in this.

FNF Boyfriend dodge Christmas.gif

Boyfriend dodging an incoming attack in the Christmas theme. Like the shaking animation, only the right arm is changed.

art/flashFiles/GF_ass_sets_CHRISTMAS_VARIANT.fla

FNF GF Dancing Beat Hair blowing Christmas.gif

The unused hair blowing animation from week 2 in Christmas form. For some reason, this is the only unused Girlfriend Christmas variant animation to only be in the source files.

Monster

art/flashFiles/Monster_Assets.fla

FNF monster ref.png

A sketch of Monster, under the names "Sample 1" and "monster ref". Some weird things can be seen in this image, such as: a humanoid shadow behind Lemon Demon, even earlier sketches (bottom left) and what appears to be a person's neck behind the sketches. Also, a small part of a pumpkin can be seen to the left, seen below. Monster's neck is also black instead of a fleshy pink.

FNF early lemon demon.png

An early (and creepier) design for Monster.

Week 6 - Hating Simulator

FNF_Sprite_assets/BF/BF_peace.psd

FNF Bf pixel hey animated.gif

Moawling, the creator of the pixel sprites seen in Week 6, released .psd files of said pixel art. In the BF folder there is a file for the peace/hey pose, which never appears in Week 6.

art/flashFiles/BF_death_pixels.fla

FNF Pizza doodles.png

In the .fla file for Boyfriend dying in Week 6, there is a doodle titled "pizza doodles".

art/flashFiles/GF_PIXEL_VARIANT.fla

FNF GF idle002 pixel.png

The source file for Girlfriend's appearance in Week 6 has an unused 3rd frame called "GF_idle002". It was likely scrapped so the animation kept up with the beat of the songs.

FNF 6 character challenge 2 png.png

The .fla file for the girls in the background of Week 6 includes drawings of several popular characters: Hyuji, Katy Kat, Chainsaw Man, the Angry Video Game Nerd, Kuwabara, and Crash Bandicoot.

Week 6 Cutscene

In a stream by PhantomArcade, he started working on a cutscene for Week 6. It starts off with a console with NG on it (standing for Newgrounds), and then it shows a spiral with Boyfriend and Girlfriend getting sucked into it.

Fnf week 6 cutscene warping.gif

For whatever reason, the warping effect from this cutscene exists unused in the FLA for Boyfriend holding Girlfriend in Week 7. The source file for this graphic is "Week 6 intro cutscene.fla"

Early Version of Week 6

This video is a collection of those leaked videos of an early version of Week 6. Most of which are from the devs' live streams and their Instagram stories.

Early Week 6 Dialogue

In one of the devs' Instagram stories and leaked videos, it was shown that Week 6's original dialogue was:

  • Senpai : GOOD MORNING, LADIES !
  • Boyfriend : *BEEP BOOP BOPEEBOP*

It also shows an early hand icon which went used, yet very small until Week 7 in which it's size increased to be more visible.

Roses

Senpai can be seen in his happy form in Roses. The notes won't play and are broken due to the audio for the song not existing in .ogg form. The girls still have their heart eyes.

Thorns

For some reason, Senpai is still in his normal form in Thorns. The background from Senpai and Roses, girls included, is still used.

Health Icon

In the earliest version of Week 6, Boyfriend uses his normal unpixelated life icon while Senpai just uses Dad's life icon. Interestedly, in the text documents for Week 6's dialogue, Senpai is referred to as "dad", which might be related to this oddity.

Sprite Sheet

In a leaked sprite sheet, Senpai only has his happy sprites from Week 6's first song of the same name. This may explain why he uses these sprites in Roses and Thorns.

Week 7 - Tankman

Hmmm...
To do:
  • FLAs for this week was released, check to see if there's any cool unused stuff in em'. For example, what seems to be Girlfriend's alternative Game Over animation.
  • art/WIP CUTSCENESHTI/cutsceneStuff contains early versions of the cutscenes in which they're sprite sheets instead of individual parts.
  • Early commits for the update have an early mapping of Stress in which Tankman's "Heh, pretty good!" line is played out with notes instead of a unique animation.

Up (Miss) Down (Miss) Left (Miss) Right (Miss)
FNF Tankman UP note MISS.gif FNF Tankman DOWN note MISS.gif FNF Tankman Note Left MISS.gif FNF Tankman Right Note MISS.gif

4 unused miss animations for Tankman. These will likely become used when Tankman becomes a playable character in the full game. Loading Tankman as Player 1 in the current Newgrounds build of the game will not show these animations, as they are not coded in.

FNFtankmanSketch.png

Tankman's ORIGINAL sketch, just colored in and without "RAP MAN" on his chest.

art/flashFiles/tankman_fnf_lip_sync_back_ta_dave.fla

In Tankman's Lip Sync FLA, there exists a bunch of Doodles Phantom Arcade did while animating.

Unused Frames

Two unused frames for when Pico kicks GF off the speakers. These were likely removed for better timing in the cutscene.

Unused Uh Oh! Censor Animation

FNF TankmanCensor.gif

In Tankman’s lip-sync FLA file, There is a symbol titled “mouth censor”. This will used for when Tankman swears when the naughtyness setting is turned on. The fla this comes from isn't included in the games source code, and is instead from a Week 7 FLA dump that PhantomArcade posted to Newgrounds.

art/flashFiles/Start_Screen_Assets.fla

FNF-OLdLOgoHQ.png

Another unused logo. Probably used before the one we see nowadays.

Animation Debug Menu

FNF animdebug.png

Although only accessible through debug source code builds or mods, this menu is what you would expect, an animation debug menu. This is used most for positioning the character's animations so they can stay in place. It can be accessed by pressing 8 in any song (only in source code), and it will load the character you are facing against in the menu. If it (somehow) can't find your opposing enemy, it will load Boyfriend.

This menu can also be found in the Newgrounds build by pressing 8 on the menu, featuring a mouthless Tankman with an excess arm. Hitting Space on this menu causes Tankman to play an animation, presumably an early version of his animations in the Guns cutscene.

Unused Audio

vidyagames.ogg

Added alongside Luckyboy. It's a low-quality clip of the infamous song "Video Games" by The Blackout Band.

c_z.mp3

Also known in GitHub as "funny music :)", this is an MP3 file that is also an SSTV signal, similar to Portal 2's hidden radio signal. It can be found in the compilable version of Friday Night Funkin'. It is unknown why it was in the GitHub, but it could have been used for an ARG of some sort.

Decoding it will output this blurry image of a notebook with scribbled handwriting:

FridayNightFunkinC zsumething.jpg

The text seems to say:

Social media, was about
expression? People who would
not have access to certain
forms of expression or conundrum

Network of networks.
Internet in this world was
also developed by military?
I think in other shit, it's
also military based maybe
this form of internet. Maybe
instead of web, it could
be called a tree?
I think nostalgia
happens at a much faster
pace because culture is
accelerating so fast

Unused Week 1 + Tutorial Dialogue

switch (SONG.song.toLowerCase())
		{
			case 'tutorial':
				dialogue = ["Hey you're pretty cute.", 'Use the arrow keys to keep up \nwith me singing.'];
			case 'bopeebo':
				dialogue = [
					'HEY!',
"You think you can just sing\nwith my daughter like that?",
"If you want to date her...",
"You're going to have to go \nthrough ME first!"
				];

			case 'dadbattle':
				dialogue = [
"gah you think you're hot stuff?",
"If you can beat me here...",
"Only then I will even CONSIDER letting you\ndate my daughter!"
				];

Found in the game's publicly available source code, in the file PlayState.hx is dialogue for the Tutorial and all tracks for Week 1. It was used in an extremely early version of the game. Footage of said cutscenes can be found here.

It is unlikely that these cutscenes will ever return, as the developers have stated that all weeks will be "fully animated with professional voice acting".
