...Well, all the articles here are, in a way. But this one moreso, and the article may contain incomplete information and editor's notes.
Hmmm...
To do:
Gamescom build.

The development history of LittleBigPlanet 3 is one of the more interesting development histories in the series. Although the core fundamentals remained mostly intact throughout development, a lot of things were drastically changed before the game's release, including characters, locations and art style. While these builds aren't in any particular order, generally they should be ordered from earliest to latest.

Development Timeline

  • 2011
    • Development on LittleBigPlanet 3 started.
  • 2014
    • June 9th - LittleBigPlanet 3 announced at E3 2014 with a release window of November that year. A playable build was also at the event.
    • August - Invitations to the LittleBigPlanet 3 Private Beta began rolling out to select community members.
    • September 13th - 11 Creators from the community were invited to Sheffield to participate in a GameJam using a pre-release build of the game.
    • November 18th - LittleBigPlanet 3 released in North America.
    • December 4th - LittleBigPlanet 3 released in Japan.

Pre-PS4 Builds (2011-2013)

Most of the footage that was taken between 2011 and 2013 appears to be based on the PlayStation 3 version, suggesting that the game hadn't yet been ported to PlayStation 4.

Internal Trailer 1

The earliest known trailer for LittleBigPlanet 3, and one of two internal trailers showcased at PlayStation Experience 2014. While not everything is confirmed to be in-game footage, (the UI elements appear to have been added in post-production) there are a number of differences to the final game found in this early trailer.

  • This build appears to make use of 30 layers, which was reduced to 16 in the final game.
  • The landscape looks more complex than anything seen in the final game, making liberal use of decorations for level geometry.
  • Buttons are used to purchase items, rather than Collectabells.
  • Velociporters appear to use the Light Stud decoration's model from LittleBigPlanet 2 as a placeholder.
  • Nana Pud has a completely different design.
  • Rusk (replaced by OddSock in the final game) appears to be a blue squirrel in this build.

Internal Trailer 2

One of the oldest trailers for the game, said to have been made somewhere between late 2012 and 2013. The trailer was shown off at PlayStation Experience 2014 during the "A Look at LittleBigPlanet 3" segment at the 2:19 mark. The trailer focuses on the Adventuring mechanics and an early incarnation of Manglewood. A number of differences can be observed in this early trailer.

  • What appears to be a hub world for Manglewood is named "Sable Oak".
  • Rail Hooks can latch onto String and other connectors.
  • The Melanie Pindrop Dress costume piece has a different colour scheme.
  • Layer Launchers have a slightly different design & animation compared to the final game.
  • Quest-related notifications appear on the top-left of the screen, rather than appearing next to your character.
  • Velociporters use a different, more complex model.
  • Jacob - an unused character in the PlayStation 4 version - has a different design.

E3 2014 Build

The first public appearance of LittleBigPlanet 3. By this point the characters, mechanics and locations had been set in stone, though there are still numerous differences elsewhere. Two levels were playable in this build: Race to the Stars and Toggle Escapes The Labyrinth.

General Differences

  • The only options available in the Popit are Customise Character and Hold to Retry.
  • The shader that applies fuzz to character models has not yet been implemented.
  • Swoop has a slightly rougher skin texture.
  • The Pod music is completely different to the final game.

Race To The Stars

  • The level badge is different.
  • The level is significantly longer, with a title screen and an introductory segment for each character. The title screen and character introductions were removed from the final game, with the level starting just after where the Swoop introduction was.
  • Neither Marlon Random nor the race that accompanies his quest are present.
  • Objects affected by the Pumpinator are made out of blue cardboard.
  • The cardboard material isn't as rough as the final.
  • The end cutscene is completely different, and requires Toggle to weigh down a button.

Tutu Tango

  • The level is named "Toggle Escapes The Labyrinth" in this build, and features a different level badge.
  • The level is a bit shorter than in the final game, missing the introduction to Toggle's shape shifting mechanic and the chase sequence at the end.

GameJam 2014 Build

On September 13th, 2014, 11 community members were invited to a GameJam using an early build of LittleBigPlanet 3. Most of the game had been finished by this point, predating the game's release by two months. A trailer for the GameJam was posted to the official PlayStation YouTube channel on October 24th, 2014, though participants shared information, pictures and videos through Twitter and Vine as the event was happening. While there are minor differences present, this build is notable for containing several assets not found in either the private beta or the final game.

General Differences

  • The centre of the Sackpocket menu has a button on it.

Zom Zom's Shop

  • While not all of the costumes are shown, the layout and selection of costumes seen in Zom Zom's shop are different to any of Zom Zom's shops in the final game.
    • In order, the costumes in the GameJam's shop are: Regal Wolf, Alligator, Natty Sharp, Japanese Warrior, Red Riding Hood, Melanie Pindrop and what looks like Terence.
    • In the final game, the Alligator and Red Riding Hood costumes are available from the start. Regal Wolf and Melanie Pindrop are found in Manglewood's shop, while Natty Sharp, Terence and Japanese Warrior are found in Bunkum Lagoon's shop.
