This is a sub-page of Proto:Contra III: The Alien Wars.

A demo version of Contra Spirits that was used at store kiosks. Gameplay is limited to one stage, but the data contains most of the full game.

General Differences

  • On startup, you choose between two options whether or not the game is released yet.
Choose a demo!
The difficulty level is shown under the level number.
  • No opening cutscene.
  • Different title screen, which reflects that it's a demo version.

  • There's only 1 or 2 player mode. No 2 Player A and 2 Player B modes. The options menu is also not available (though present in the data).
  • Options menu can be accessed indirectly, but you can't leave from it.
  • Different attract demos:
    • One of them is of a modified Stage 1 with text overlay. They added all of the game's powerup weapons to the level to showcase. All powerup locations are near the start, in close succession of each other (the flamethrower doesn't appear in this level in the final). This modified stage is accessible (mentioned below).
    • After the attract demos is a splash screen, whose message depends on which option you selected during startup.
  • The difficulty mode is displayed on the pre-stage stats screen (only Easy is available here).

    • After which is a controller layout screen.

Gameplay Differences

  • The player has unlimited lives.
  • Cheat code input from the final works, although the 30 lives code is pointless.
  • Only Stage 3 is playable.

Level Differences

The rest of the game can still be accessed, for the most part, as the level select code from the final is present and functional here. There are no stage completion intermission screens, though.

This also appears in the attract demo.

Stage 1

  • Exactly like the tutorial demo mentioned above, including the text permanently on the screen and all the powerups.
  • Completing the stage will take the player back to the Konami logo.

Stage 2

  • Completing the stage will take the player back to the Konami logo.

Stage 3

  • Differences in some powerup and enemy placements, and some hazards.
  • Before the stage boss breaks through the wall, the screen fades to black, followed by messages that depend on your selection on startup.

Stage 4

  • About the first quarter of the level is missing.
  • Completing the stage will take the player back to the Konami logo.

Stage 5

  • Completing the stage will softlock the game, leaving the player stuck in the boss area after it's defeated.

Stage 6

This level is also immpossible to complete as the glitch graphics act like holes.
  • Notably, the graphics are missing shortly after the start. Probably removed for all of the demo features.
  • Completing the stage will softlock the game, leaving the player stuck in the boss area after it's defeated.
