Description

Like Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask uses bit flags in order to track which events have occurred in a playthrough. When the player takes certain actions, such as triggering an event that advances the plot, talking to a particular NPC, or obtaining a particular item, the flags linked to these actions will change from 0 to 1. The Event Editor allows the flags to be turned off and on manually, affecting what the game thinks the player has done in their save file.

Flags are categorized by three different types of tables, described in their respective sections. Each row in a table contains 8 flags. For example, the right-most bit in week_event_reg[2] is the flag that tracks whether or not Link has entered the Ancient Castle of Ikana. Changing this flag from 0 to 1 makes the game believe that the aforementioned event has occurred.

Mapping Flags

If you plan to test event flags in order to find out what triggers them, you may want to keep the following in mind:

1. Sometimes, a single action turns on more than one event flag. Each time you perform an action, check every flag table to make sure you don't miss any!
2. The Debug ROM's save file already has some flags set by default. Every time you use map select, the flags will be reset to these defaults. You can avoid the flags resetting by using an exit modifier to travel around the game, rather than map select.
   • Use these codes with an Exit List.

   • To do: Get an exit replacement code for MM.

3. Using the event editor to turn on an event flag for receiving an item won't make that item appear in your inventory. Items must be added manually via the inventory editor.

To access the Event Editor, perform the following steps:

1. Open the Debug ROM and enter a save file.
2. Turn on the code below:
   • D03E5075 0020
   • 8145F61E 0003
3. Press L on Controller 1 to bring up the Event Editor.
4. Press B on Controller 1 to close it.

This info table likely owes its name to the fact that the plot of Majora's Mask was originally going to span a full week, instead of just three days. (The Debug ROM also preserves another leftover from this scrapped gameplay mechanic: The Environment Editor option that sets the current day allows one to choose from all 7 days of the week.)

Legend

• White Background: The flag is permanent.
• Blue Background: The flag is reset by the Song of Time, or the moon crashing.
• Yellow Background: The flag is reset during a scene, depending on the circumstances.

Notes

• The Doggy Racetrack flags from rows 42 to 48 are set randomly in order to determine dog stats.
• The two Tingle-related bits in row 64 save the player's form when first talking to Tingle in the current cycle. Tingle recognizes the player and gives special text if he's spoken to as a different form on subsequent visits. (00 = Zora, 01 = Deku, 10 = Goron, 11 = Human)
