Red Steel is a launch title for the Nintendo Wii which makes use of the Nintendo Wii Remote for the use of shooting and sword fighting.

Debug Executables

The US version appears to have extra content on the disc that is not present on any other version of the game. Within the System folder on the disc, you can find two elf files (Wii executable files), known as WarefareRevoReader.elf and WarefareRevoRetail.elf. These are the 1.97.1 and 1.97.2 unstripped executables for Red Steel, complete with what appears to be its code name. The US release is 1.97.2, while the European/Japanese releases are 1.97.3.

Using a modified version of simpleload, we can hook the game up to use these executables to the game. Extract the elf files from the disc image. Put an elf file on the root of the SD card under as "REDE41.elf" for the US version. While untested, it's possible to do this on the European/Japanese versions by using their GameIDs.

The two elfs on the disc have some immediately noticeable differences compared to the released version. Debug info is plastered on all of the loading screens, including the version of the game. As well, when using an emulator alongside the game's symbol map, the debug versions of the game put out many more debug messages, many of which being from the Unreal Engine version the game is made in. Some of which are related to networking (which Red Steel does not use) or are plain garbage.

You can see debug information printed on loading screens.

WarefareRevoRetail crashes while attempting to load the main menu due to missing files, but version 1.97.1, WarefareRevoReader, is able to load and is fully playable. There are likely other differences as this is an older version of the game.
