Saints Row (2006)/Regional Differences

From The Cutting Room Floor

This is a sub-page of Saints Row (2006).

And you were just a scroll away from being fired too...
Oh dear, I do believe I have the vapors.
This page contains content that is not safe for work or other locations with the potential for personal embarrassment.
Such as: A stripper wearing pasties.

Saints Row had a few regional changes to make it sell in certain regions, though not as bad as what the sequel had gone through.

General Changes

Hmmm...
To do:
Get closer in-depth comparisons with footage.

Legal Screen

The copyright screen was changed to accommodate with each region's age rating. The other logos are slightly tilted in comparison to the American one, to make room for the "Game Experience May Change during online play" disclaimer. Strangely, the European one alternates between the BBFC and PEGI age rating system when played in English sometimes.

Strangely, there exists a interface_legal_nz file, where it uses the exact same file as the Australian (interface_legal_aus) ABC rating, where it may have been intended for the OCB but no video games sold in New Zealand carry that label.

Bonus Screen

The Bonus Screen advertising the mobile game was changed via regions. For the sake of clarity, only the 720 versions of the graphics will be uploaded.

German Version Changes

On all copies of the game sold in Germany, several changes were made in order to get ship with a USK 18 rating in that region. Though the game can be played in German, uncut on other regional copies except for the Japanese version.

International Germany
  • Some of the Attract Mode gameplay was altered, mostly to tone down violence. As of a result, the video is 20 seconds shorter.
    • The scenes of Playa getting burned on a fire at 0:14 was overlaid with the car exploding from The Streets of Stilwater cutscene, while the last scene is cut short before Playa is shown caught on fire.
    • The scene of Playa driving a white Attrazione jumping off the drawbridge was replaced with Playa driving a red La Fuerza off a ramp near Misty Lane. Strangely, that scene is leftover from the Demo Version.
    • The scene of Playa dressed in yellow at 0:34 was cut short.
    • The part where Playa gets hit by Los Carnales at 0:38 was slightly edited to remove the burning pedestrian.
    • The scene of Playa dressed in a black suit in 0:54 was moved to near the end.
  • The Hitman and Mayhem Activities are removed.
    • That makes the Platinum T3K Urban, Gold Plated GDHC .50, Platinum AS12 Riot, Mr. Wong Homie, Platinum RPG, 50% Friendly Fire discount are completely unobtainable. Additionally, the Molotov Cocktails, Pipe Bombs, Hand Grenade and RPG Launcher Weapon Cache unlocks cannot be obtained either.
    • All strings associated with the activity were removed, but the graphics are left over.
  • Pedestrians disappear instantly after being killed, rather than leaving blood behind.
  • The effect for burning pedestrians was changed to make it look more smoky. The effect assigned to them is "german_fire", and can even be found in other copies.
  • Oddly, the foreign-language text files (fr_strings, de_strings, es_strings and it_strings) appear to contain a different revision of the translation;

French

International German
Matchmaking d'amis
Mise en relation
    • The "Player Match" in French is called that in French.

Spanish

International German

Italian

International German

    • Some typos were fixed.
  • Oddly, only one piece of text got changed at the "MP_GANGS_SERVER_DOWN" string, therefore being based on an earlier string;
International German
Der Saints Row Server ist zurzeit nicht verfügbar. Versuchen Sie es später noch einmal. Banden sind im Augenblick nicht verfügbar. Bitte versuche es später erneut.

An English equlivent exists;

International German
The Saints Row server is not available at this time. Please try again later. Gangs are not available at this time. Please try again later.
  • The "MSN_ACTIVITES_RESPECT_REPEAT_GERMAN" string was removed, due to it containing a duplicate of the existing string.

Japanese Version Changes

Even more changes had to be made to ship with a CERO Z rating. The changes from the German version are carried over to here, except that the original burning effect was restored along with the Attract Mode video.

  • The unused Japanese text font has been expanded to support more symbols;
International (Unused) Japan

  • The JPCharList file was even changed to accomidate that;
International Japan
// a list of all characters known to be used in Saint's Row.
// used to compress from 65536 Unicode to ~1500 Utilized Japanese
// BUILD Jun  5 2006 14:48:33

//Used character list based on file 'c:\jp_stringsu.txt'

// used to compress from 65536 Unicode to ~1500 Utilized Japanese

  • Cutscenes now feature a (rather jarring) black border where the text should be, likely to make it more readable.
  • Japanese text is heavily enlarged in comparison to other languages, taking up more space of text.
    • The latter is notable in the semi-infamous Secret Stash cheat, which ended up being untranslated.
  • Samantha's design reuses a model from one of the other strippers, because her original model apparently looked too revealing. It can also be temporarily bought back via a glitch, where if the player saves and reloads the game after having her as a recruit.
    • Oddly, her unlock screen graphic wasn't changed.

  • Some new text strings were added or changed:
    • The following were changed:
International Japan
CHEAT ACTIVIATION
CHEAT ACTIVATION
\"%s\" has invited you to join the gang:
"%s" has invited you to join the gang:
Notice: One or more players has not downloaded the level you are trying to play.
Notice: One or more players has not\ndownloaded the level you are trying to play.
    • A space was removed at the beginning of the "HELP_TEXT_CHEAT_CODES" string, while all of the (missing) and (none) strings were blanked out.
Hmmm...
To do:
Mod the game to load the cutscenes, reward screens and images with Japanese subtitles and put them here.
  • Though Hitman and Mayhem were removed as Activities, there are still unused and translated leftovers present;
    • The cutscenes for Mayhem and Hitman go completely unused in the Japanese version and even have translated subtitles!
    • The rewards are translated, unused.
