Hmmm...
To do:
  • There's seems to be a debug test mode that has additional functionality, namely region changing and "ADTEST" (whatever that is). Toggling Dev Debug dipswitch does not enable it - rather it makes access to test menu harder.
  • The Honda cars are disabled in the US version of the game (MAME set sidebs2u). On the other hand, in the English version where Honda cars are available (MAME set sidebs2), the SiR trim badging (and FC RX-7's "Savanna" name) is removed.
  • Is the CPU-only Impreza Sports Wagon supposed to be playable?
  • Was the Efini logo or name ever used in the FD RX-7 during the attract mode specifications screen?
  • What does the Evoluzione RR revision add? Japanese Wikipedia says automatic transmission rev limit/shift points were changed and reverse tracks were added. Also, is the post-race replay RR only?

Side by Side 2 is where the series' Initial D influence begin to show up, effectively being the officially unofficial game for the racing manga, a fact reflected on one of the high score lists.

Unused Audio

Hmmm...
To do:
Is song ID 50H used in this game? It is listed as "Ataract" in the compilation album collecting this game's songs with that from Densha de GO!, but the game uses 51H instead, which is not in the album.

Sound ID 03H is the "Side by Side" title call by itself. This would later be used in Side by Side Special.

Sound ID 0FH is the "Welcome to Side by Side" title call used in the previous game.

Free Camera

SideBySide2-freecamera.png

Present in the game is a free camera mode which can be enabled in MAME by toggling the Dev Debug dipswitch on. While in-game, the steering wheel turns the camera left and right and the gas and brake pedals move the camera forwards and backwards respectively.

Car Listings

Starting from 0x142A38 in the main CPU, there are strings referencing cars that may not be necessarily present in the game. The list mirrors the list present in Side by Side Special, effectively a port of this game that adds cars and tracks from the first game, with few exceptions.

Hex String Notes
0x142A38 BNR32 SKYLINE GT-R
0x142E38 BCNR33 SKYLINE GT-R Was in the first game, but not in this game.
0x142FD8 RX7 FD3S RZ
0x143170 RX7 FC3S
0x143438 SILVIA KS Was in the first game, but not in this game.
0x1434A0 180SX Placed away from the larger car listing in Side by Side Special. Noticeably placed rather near the first Silvia mention here.
0x143634 CIVIC SIR
0x1438FC CRX SIR Placed away from the larger car listing in Side by Side Special.
0x1439BC HONDA NSX-R The NSX that was in the first game was a regular model, not a Type R.
0x143B54 TOYOTA SUPRA RZ Was in the first game, but not in this game.
0x143CF0 AE85 LEVIN The Levin that is in the game is a AE86, not an AE85. However, the reference was kept in Side by Side Special 2000 nonetheless.
0x143E88 AE86 FUJIWARA TOUFU Note the blatant Initial D reference.
0x144028 DELTA HF INTEGRALE EVO Never present in any of the Side by Side or Battle Gear games. (While Battle Gear 4 added foreign manufacturers, Lancia was not one of them.)
The car's chassis code, L31E5, is mentioned in the ending credits under Hiroyuki Sako's name.
0x1441CC HONDA ODYSSEY Never present in any of the Side by Side or Battle Gear games.
0x144368 SUBARU LEGACY WAGON GTB
0x14450C SUBARU IMPREZA WRX-RA STI3
0x1447E4 MITSUBISHI LANCER RS EVO4 The Lancer Evolution IV that is in the game is the GSR trim.
0x14498C TOYOTA CELICA GT-FOUR WRC
0x144C64 NISSAN 180SX The mention that was present among the larger car listing in Side by Side Special.
0x144E00 NISSAN SILVIA Ks The duplicate mention that was removed in Side by Side Special 2000. Perhaps intended to be the S14?
0x144FA0 HONDA ACCORD WAGON SIR Never present in any of the Side by Side or Battle Gear games.

Additionally, at 0x13E48C there are spec sheets for three DTM race cars from the 1995 season, as well as for the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution III (which would appear in the first Battle Gear game), Honda Civic SiR (EG), Nissan Skyline GT-R (R32), and Subaru Impreza WRX STi Type RA. These are different in style compared to spec sheets used by the attract mode.

Non-string data sandwiching each entry were removed for readability.
