<Sanky> please suggest an unused sprite with a clock or something
This game is still under active development.
Be aware that any unused content you find may become used or removed in the future. Please only add things to the article that are unlikely to ever be used, or went unused for some time. If they do get used, please remove them from the page and specify in the edit summary!
So very stubbly.
This page is rather stubbly and could use some expansion.
Are you a bad enough dude to rescue this article?

Starbound is an open sandbox adventure game about exploring procedurally-generated planets and working with colorful NPCs to save the universe.

Hmmm...
To do:
Tons of unused content from graphics to audio to code, etc. Since some unused content was removed in the v1.0 update, earlier versions should be observed too.

Alternate Glitch Portrait

Starbound-Alt Glitch Portrait.gif

There's a different portrait for the Glitch AI, which is similar to that of the Novakid AI and has a complete set of animations. This portrait was scrapped due to it being too ridiculous.

Unused Background Files

The game directory parallax\images\tile\stalagtentacles\base contains two unused files for the backgrounds of an underground layer of the Tentacle biome.

Starbound-stalagtentacles base old.png
This image titled "old.png" is likely a remnant asset from before the game's official release, as it looks very similar to generic assets in the surrounding directories.

Starbound-stalagtentacles base 2.png
This is a render of an Aseprite image file titled "2.ase" with all layers enabled (and whitespace trimmed). By default, the only visible layer is the rocky layer, which is the same as the used file "1.png".

The "old.png" image mentioned above is included as well, hidden beneath the solid brown color layer, and was likely used as a reference for the artist. Various red scribbles are seen on their own layer, likely used by the artist to roughly position the holes in the background. Lastly, the solid horizontal pink line is on its own layer at the very top.

The original "2.ase" file with all of its layers intact can be downloaded here:

Unused Music

File Filename Notes
title-theme-concept-old.ogg An old concept of the Title Theme. The used version is named "title-menu-music.ogg" in the files. Oddly enough, a version of this is used by the Protectorate Radio and Jukebox items.
home-concept-loop.ogg Likely might have been used for an old concept of either the intro cutscene, or for the player's spaceship.
forest-loop.ogg This track is more similar in style to the previous two tracks than the rest of the planetary tracks, so this likely was made in the same development period as them. Forest Battle 2 is used as a bossfight track, however, but it's unlikely that this track is related to it.
ocean-exploration2.ogg Ocean Battle 1 is used in the Erchius Mining Facility mission.
desert-battle-2.ogg Desert Exploration 1 and Desert Exploration 2 are used.
tentacle-battle1-loop.ogg Likely originally meant for the scrapped "Tentacle" biome, before it got changed to be exclusive to the final boss.
tentacle-exploration1.ogg
scorian-flow.ogg One of the few tracks made by Solatrus instead of Curtis Schweitzer.
gravitational-collapse.ogg A non-looping version of the regular track. Has a completely different intro.
ultramarine-loop.ogg A looping version of Solatrus' regular track. The intro and outro are simply cut out of the track.

Default Quest

Hmmm...
To do:
Find a way to consistently trigger this. Also, get a better screenshot now that the string has been found.

Get your own mangy pelts, Proctor!

Under certain rare circumstances, the game's stage and interface will load before the Quest Tracker can load up the correct quest to track. When this happens, the Tracker displays a dummy string, "Gather 8 Mangy Wolf Pelts," before loading the correct one.

Its usage seems to be as an error handler or debugger, used in situations where there are quests to track, but the game cannot load them right away. That being the case, the objective is not linked to any actual quest or item in the game. However, it appears to be referencing MMORPGs, most notably, World of Warcraft, wherein a player is frequently tasked with objectives such as "Gather X amount of Y."

The string can be found within the game's file, interface/questtracker/questtracker.config.

Unused Enemies

Chest Trapper

Starbound-Chest Trapper 1.gif Starbound-Chest Trapper 2.gif

The Chest Trapper, which came in two forms, had sprites, but was never implemented in the game. The assets were removed in the Glad Giraffe update and are no longer in the game.

Heck Blob

Starbound-Heck Blob.gif

The Heck Blobs were originally added in the underground Heck mini-biomes with the Enraged Koala update, but were removed in the Cheerful Giraffe update.

Chubby Bird Body

Unused Used
Starbound-chubbybirdbody-old.png Starbound-chubbybirdbody-final.png

An older, shading-less version of a procedurally-generated monster part is left in the files of the Bone Bird and the Mini Drone, seemingly for use as a reference while making them.
