Revision Difference

Seems like there is a glitch exclusive to the FDS version: http://blog.hardcoregaming101.net/2012/03/random-bit-of-castlevania-lore.html --Ganon 22:30, 16 Jan 2013 (CET)

Potential additional unused sprite?

Does the Moai head bonus item spin around when you find it? RahanAkero

Yeah, but the animation is broken. The two halves of the sideways-facing sprite are squished together. WAY TO GO, KONAMI! --BMF54123 20:42, 10 May 2010 (EDT)

Unused Subweapons

Both the cross and the book are used in the MSX version of Castlevania which is called Vampire Killer in the European release or Akumajou Dracula in Japan. Both items come in multiple color varients with each color possessing different abilities, as such:

  • Tan Cross - Destroy All Enemies On Screen (NES Equivalent: Rosary)
  • Grey Cross - (The axe and grey cross both operate similarly to the boomerang in the NES version. The axe is short-ranged but high-powered whereas the cross is long-ranged but low-powered.)
  • White Book - Decrease Item Cost (There are merchants in the game who will sell you items.)
  • Red Book - Increase Item Cost

There are several other items that appear in the MSX game that don't appear in the NES version, including candles, keys, boots, wings and shields.) The MSX version was released about a month after the Famicom version so they were presumably developed side by side. My guess is that the items were originally intended for use in the NES version in a manner similar to their MSX equivalents but were cut for whatever reason. (Censorship seems unlikely not only because of the fact that the cut graphics are unused in the Japanese version as well but also because the rosary wasn't cut and bears just as much religious symbolism as the other two graphics.)

I haven't played the MSX version enough to determine if the additional bonus items appear in it but I'll look into it and see what I can find out.

Huh, interesting. Thanks for sharing, I'll see if we can't get that up somewhere. Makes me wonder if there's unused stuff in the MSX version, too. --Xkeeper 19:49, 10 May 2010 (EDT)

Unused Rosary Subweapon

In the US release at PROM address 0x01FA56, it checks if $015B is set to #0A (or rather, if $015B-8=2), then sets $015C if so. This all points back to the Rosary as a subweapon, with $015C actually preventing any subweapons from being used while the (subweapon) Rosary is flashing. Considering $015D also gets set and counts down whenever either Rosary is used; and the average player would never use the Rosary, pick up a new subweapon, then use the new subweapon before $015D finishes counting down; $015C is just a pointless variable no matter how you look at it.

I only state all this just to back up my claim that the Rosary really was an unused subweapon and not something I just made up.

Unused Bible Graphic

It's actually used in the background of the Clock Tower (Stage 17). You can see it in the section with the gears.--Sallongsword (talk) 03:54, 12 August 2016 (EDT)

Good catch. ReyVGM (talk) 22:52, 27 June 2022 (UTC)
