Playable Characters

Edith

Salty

A certified hood classic

Edith was a planned "secret character" for Antibirth. She was incomplete at the time of the mod's release and thus went unused, though she could be accessed through hacks. She does not appear as a character in Repentance, but one of her gameplay concepts was instead given to the Tainted Forgotten, and she makes a cameo appearance as a random statue the player can transform into when using an inverted Chariot card.

Target edith TBOI Unused.png

In Antibirth, Edith's gimmick was that she could only move by teleporting, the position of which was controlled by the player and marked with a cursor similar to Epic Fetus. This cursor graphic is used in Antibirth when playing as Edith via hacks. An associated .anm2 file exists that causes it to flash between red and dark red.

Tainted Edith Door

TBOI Repentence Unused Locked Tainted Door.png

The graphics for the tainted character selection menu contain an unused character door, which appears to have been intended for Edith due to the salt shaker. Perhaps Edith was intended to return in Repentance with a tainted version at some point?

Dark Esau

Spooky

A stage transition/versus screen portrait for Dark Esau. Dark Esau isn't a playable character, so this is not needed.

Rooms & Obstacles

Plum Hint

TBOIRepentance-PlumHint.png

A small graphic hinting at the "sparing Baby Plum" mechanic.

Downpour Double Key Door

TBOIRepentance-DoorChainDownpour.png

A double kkey door intended for Downpour. Double key doors don't have unique graphics per floor, so it's likely that this was intended for Downpour's entrance door.

Ashpit Ash

TBOIRepentance-AshpitAsh.png

Sprites for pits filled with ash. While there are indeed rooms filled with ash in Ashpit, they don't use these graphics.

Mines Markings

TBOIRepentance-MinesMarkings.png

Some pebble patterns used in Antibirth as a hint for the Knife Piece 2 puzzle. The knife pieces were completely reworked in Repentance, so this goes unused.

Spicy Rails

TBOIRepentance-RailsSpicy.png

A red-hot variant of the mine cart rails seen in Mines and Ashpit.

Mausoleum Boss

TBOIRepentance-MausoleumBoss.png TBOIRepentance-MausoleumBoss2.png

An unused boss backdrop for Mausoleum exists within Repentance. This was used in Antibirth for the Visage's arena; however, the Visage was moved to Gehenna in Repentance, leaving this backdrop unused. It can still be enabled by changing a stage's backdrop id to 42. If you attempt to fight the Visage in Mausoleum via the debug console, the boss room will use this backdrop.

Mausoleum B

TBOIRepentance-MausoleumB3.png TBOIRepentance-MausoleumB4.png TBOIRepentance- MausoleumB.png TBOIRepentance- MausoleumB2.png

The entire backdrop for the "back half" of Mausoleum still exists in Repentance, and can be enabled in-game by changing a stage's backdrop to 41.

Red TNT

You're the bomb!

A sprite atlas of Red TNT, which was used in Antibirth and functioned as a more volatile variant of TNT.

Ghost Babel Exit Doors

EXIT

Artwork for the exit doors in the scrapped Ghost Babel challenge.

Cracked House Door

Isaac!

A variant of the Home door with a crack in the middle, similar to how the door on Isaac's room is depicted in the game's intro. This graphic technically is used for Isaac's bedroom on the Home floor, but it can only be seen by spawning enemies via the Everything Jar, which is extremely unlikely.

Angel Room Trapdoor

TBOIRepentance-AngelRoomTrapdoor.png

An unused trapdoor colored to match the Angel Room/Cathedral tilesets. Originally used for the Jacob's Ladder item in Antibirth, this graphic became unused when the item was reworked into The Stairway.

Items

Placeholder Item

The Installing of Counter-Strike: Source

A placeholder item icon reminiscent of the missing textures used in Source Engine games. Why this didn't exist until Repentance is a mystery.

Pill Crusher

Pills pills pills

The Pill Crusher was an item that was originally planned for Antibirth. According to a blog post, it would have been a no-charge active item found in shops that, when used, would consume Isaac's held pill (if any) and activate a room-wide effect depending on the type of pill.

The file name of the item's icon indicates that it would have occupied the item ID 648, placing it between 4.5 Volt (647) and Fruity Plum (649). In the final game, this item ID goes unused.

Menorah

It always turns into a golden candelabrum

The entire sprite atlas of the Menorah familiar from Antibirth. The Menorah is one of the few (non-redundant) items from Antibirth that didn't make the cut for Repentance, where it would've increased the amount of tears Isaac fired every time he was hit for a total of 7 times, releasing blue flames in the process.

Stone Bombs

Ready to rock

Graphics of live Stone Bombs (both normal and enlarged from Mr. Mega) from Antibirth. Stone Bombs are another of the few items from Antibirth that didn't make the cut for Repentance, where it released a rock wave in each cardinal direction upon exploding. Most likely became redundant after the addition of Brimstone Bombs.

Knife Pieces

Let me see what you have

The Knife Piece 2 and Knife Piece 3 familiars from Antibirth. The second and third knife pieces were combined in Repentance, leaving these graphics unused.

Beth's Heart

Have a heart

Beth's Heart is a familiar-based item that didn't make it into either Antibirth or Repentance. It would have given a chance to recharge Isaac's current active item upon collecting Soul Hearts.

Dataminer Swings

Isaacrepentance effect dataminer.png

The Dataminer item's sprite sheet has graphics for it being swung, reused and recolored from the rework of Notched Axe in Repentance. Dataminer's behavior is unchanged from Afterbirth+, so these sprites aren't used or needed.

Enemies

Unused Champion Sprites

Sprites for Champion versions of the Angelic Baby (Small), Fetal Demon, Bishop, and Fissure enemies, which are never used since these enemies cannot spawn as Champions. Although small Angelic Babies and Fetal Demons are coded to be able to spawn as Champions, they are never placed in any rooms on their own and thus cannot be seen without hacking the game.

Head Projectile

TBOIRepentance-HeadProjectile.png

A Sub Horf with a unique color scheme and missing frames. There's an animation file that is labeled as 009.015_head projectile.anm2, though it doesn't use these sprites. These sprites seem to be an early or placeholder version of the Dead Isaac enemy, specifically the projectile created when Mother smacks one at the player; Dead Isaac's sprites are used in the aforementioned "head projectile" animation, and they both use the same color palette.

Downpour Faceless

TBOIRepentance-FacelessDownpour.png

A Downpour variant of Faceless, most likely going to be used in the Flooded Caves. In Repentance, this enemy isn't programmed to have enemy variants, so it is impossible to see even when spawning them in.

"Normal" Blurb

TBOIRepentance-UnusedBlurb.png

A "normal" variant of Blurb, used outside of Downpour, Dross and the Flooded Caves. Blurbs were spawned by the Mausoleum version of Mom's Heart in Antibirth, but this doesn't happen in Repentance. The only way this can be seen is if it's randomly spawned with the Everything Jar, which is exceptionally unlikely.

Bloated Gas Dwarf

TBOIRepentance-UnusedFartigan.png

An unused frame for the Gas Dwarf enemy with a bloated head. This graphic is used in an animation titled "Death" that never plays in-game.

Dashing Dump

TBOIRepentance-DumpDash.png

The Dump enemies have unused frames of their head dashing, suggesting that the Dump Heads were going to have a dash attack. Alternatively, this could have been an alternate sprite for their heads sliding off of their bodies.

Spinning Poot Mine

TBOIRepentance-UnusedPootMine.png

Unique rotation frames for the Poot Mine, suggesting it would've rotated as it floated through the air.

Needle/Pasty

TBOIRepentance-NeedleHead.pngTBOIRepentance-PastyHead.png

Needles and Pasties have unused frames for coming out of the ground. While both Needles and Pasties have animations for coming out of the ground, these sprites expose more of their head than the used ones. This suggests their "pop-up" animation may have been longer at some point.

Mines Pacer/Gusher

TBOIRepentance-PacerMines.png

An unused Mines variation of the Pacer/Gusher enemies. While Facelesses can turn into Pacers and Gushers in the Mines, they don't use these sprites. This is a leftover from Antibirth, where Gapers, Frowning Gapers, Pacers and Gushers were planned to have Mines variants.

Crackle Body

TBOIRepentance-CrackleBody.png

Crackles have unused body frames for walking up and down. In Repentance, Crackles always use their horizontal walking sprites.

Clickety Clack

TBOIRepentance-ClicketyClackHead.pngTBOIRepentance-ClicketyClackSit.png

Clickety Clacks have an unused facial expression that is never seen, as well as unused sitting sprites. The sitting sprites have an alternate color scheme that imply they were going to be used when Clutch possesses a Clickety Clack, as these colors are used in other sprites for Clickety Clacks.

Carrion Princess

TBOIRepentance-CarrionPrincessSummon.png

Carrion Princesses have unused graphics and an unused animation for spawning something from their rear, much like the Carrion Queen.

Black Knight Heads

TBOIRepentance-BlackKnightHead.png

Black Knights have unused versions of their heads without the fire in their eye sockets, both with and without their brain.

Unused Morningstar

TBOIRepentance-UnusedMorningstar.png

Unused frames for a second variation of the Morningstar enemy and a second chain graphic that would've went along with it.

Peeping Fatty's Eyes

TBOIRepentance-PeepingFattyEyes.png

The Peeping Fatty's eyes have unused frames of what seems to be them "standing up".

Corpse Lump

TBOIRepentance-LumpCorpse.pngTBOIRepentance-LumpCorpse2.png

Two Corpse variants for the Lump enemy, with a unique facial expression more similar to the Flash original. These are a leftover from Antibirth where Lumps could naturally appear in the Corpse. If Lumps are spawned in the Corpse via a reward plate or otherwise, they use their standard graphics, as they aren't programmed to have floor alts.

Gray Gasbag

TBOIRepentance-GrayGasbag.png

A recolor of the Gasbag enemies, colored grayish. This was used in Antibirth when Gasbags appeared in gray/blue rooms in Corpse; however, in Repentance, green Gasbags are used for all Corpse backdrops.

Level 2 Gaper/Gusher

TBOIRepentance-lvl2hopper.png

The sprite sheet for the Level 2 Gaper/Gusher enemies has unused sprites of the body jumping, perhaps meant for an unused Level 2 Hopper enemy or a scrapped attack. They also have two unused idling sprites that most likely would have been used for Level 2 Gusher, since Level 2 Gaper has different idling sprites that are used.

Unused Tainted Bodies

TBOIRepentance-TaintedBodies.png

The Tainted Mulligan's sprite sheet has body sprites in red, gray, and pale/bloodied that are not used. It is theorized that the bloodied body would've been a part of the unused Tainted Mr. Maw enemy, due to the body and the heads sharing the same palette.

Tainted Soy Creep

TBOIRepentance-TaintedSoyCreep.png

Tainted Soy Creeps have unused sprites of their cheeks deflating that probably would have been used during these attacks.

White Tainted Tube Worm

TBOIRepentance WhiteTaintedTubeWorm.png

The Tainted Tube Worms colored white, which would've been used for floors outside of Downpour. While the regular variant uses similar sprites when it appears in Dross, the Tainted versions never appear outside of the Downpour section of the Ascent sequence, leaving these sprites unused. If one were to spawn in a Tainted Tube Worm on a floor outside of Downpour or the Flooded Caves via the debug console, or with the Everything Jar, it will use these sprites as intended.

Dark Esau Bestiary Portrait

TBOIRepentance-BestiaryDarkEsau.png

An unused bestiary portrait for Dark Esau. Dark Esau does have a bestiary portrait in Repentance, but it is very different to this one (though their silhouettes are exactly the same). While Dark Esau's used portrait is located in death bosses.png, which is used for bosses and mini-bosses, the unused one is in death enemies.png, which is used for regular enemies. This most likely means that Dark Esau was planned to be implemented as an enemy rather than a mini-boss.

Bosses

Maid in the Mist

Guess which Antibirth artist designed this

An unused boss portrait for "Maid in the Mist". A post-release Antibirth blogpost teased this boss in name only, and was likely the precursor to Min-Min, as not only are their attacks and theme very similar, but they were also assigned the ID 913 according to the filename.

Unused Shell Segment

TBOIRepentance-ShellSegmentUnused.png

A very run-down segment of The Shell.

Hornfel's Detonator

TBOIRepentance-UnusedHornfel.png

Graphics for Hornfel activating a TNT detonator, and sticking his fingers in his ears.

Singe

TBOIRepentance-UnusedSinge.png

Various unused poses for Singe.

Reap Creep Death

TBOIRepentance-UnusedReapCreepDeath.png

An alternate take on Reap Creep's death animation.

Dabbing Heretic

TBOIRepentance-HereticDabbing.png

An unused frame of the Heretic dabbing, a dance move popularized by memes in 2014.

Siren Attacks

TBOIRepentance-UnusedSiren.png

Various unused graphics for The Siren. The first is a leftover from The Siren's revival mechanic from Antibirth, while the rest are from her musical note attack, both of which were removed from Repentance.

Corpse Teratoma

TBOI R boss 068 teratoma corpse.png

An altered spritesheet for the Teratoma boss for Corpse. While there are a small handful of rooms in Corpse that contain Teratoma, it does not use this sprite.

Wormwood

TBOIRepentance-UnusedWormwood.png

Unused angles of Wormwood's head.

TBOIRepentance-WormwoodCorpse.png

A recolor of Wormwood for the Corpse. This is a leftover from when it could appear in Corpse in Antibirth. If Wormwood is spawned in Corpse using commands, it will not use these sprites due to the Corpse not having a suffix in stages.xml.

Sideways Scourge

TBOIRepentance-UnusedScourge.png

Profile views of The Scourge.

Mother Arm

Tboirepentance mothermiddlefinger.png

The spritesheet for Mother's arms contain an unused sprite of her flipping the bird.

Ultra Death

TBOIRepentance-UnusedUltraDeath.png

An unused and clearly unfinished frame of Ultra Death's body.

Beast Laughing

TBOIRepentance-BeastLaugh.png

Unused graphics for The Beast laughing in the background. This likely would've been used alongside the Ultra Harbingers' laughing animations.

Beast Pog

TBOIRepentance-BeastPog.png

An unused frame for the Beast's mouth, with a very... peculiar facial expression. PogChamp was sort of a running joke throughout Repentance's development, with developers sharing various memes featuring Isaac characters "pogging". This facial expression is technically used in one of the Beast's surfacing animations, but it's obscured by the lava.

HUD Icons

Teleporter Room Icon

Judas is sappin' my teleporter!

A map icon for the teleporter room, which was used in Antibirth to access the back half of the Mausoleum. Interestingly, this icon appears on the game's Steam page, implying the back half was cut later in development.

Unused Stat Icons

Kids shouldn't believe in fortunes

Two unused "Found HUD" icons. The first presumably would have been used to show the chance of a Planetarium generating on the current floor, a stat that is otherwise not visible to the player. The crown icon is unknown, though could've been related to Treasure Rooms in some way due to them commonly using similar crown icons.

Demo Timer

Keeping time!

The timer used for demos. Once the timer hit zero, you would transform into The Lost and could only take one hit before dying.

Collection Page Items

The following unused icons exist on the item collection page's sprite atlas:

Unused Item Costumes

Name Graphics Mock-up Comment
Donkey Jawbone TBOIRepentance-DonkeyJawbone.png Tboirepentance donkeyjawbonemockup.png The costume for Antibirth's "Donkey Jawbone" item. This item didn't make the cut for Repentance, and was instead made an attribute of Tainted Samson and the BERSERK! item.
Pacifist Determination or something, idk Tboirepentance pacifistmockup.png A costume for a nonexistent item called "Pacifist" with ID 662. The animation file associated with this costume positions the flower on Isaac's hand, giving the appearance of Isaac holding onto it. According to developers, it made rooms timed like the PAC1F1SM seed, and would've given rewards for leaving rooms uncleared.
Lucky 7 TBOIRepentance-Lucky7.png Tboirepentance luckysevenmockup.png A costume for an item called "Lucky 7", with ID 77x, which means this was intended for the original Antibirth mod. According to developer description, this item had a chance to turn enemies into golden chests or slot machines that, when given coins, would shoot coin projectiles at enemies. It was axed because it was "too wacky and ridiculous".

Unused Unlockables

Unused images for unlockables. Most of these are leftovers from Antibirth, they were stored in a subfolder named unused, however, this folder has since been removed.

TBOIRepentance-UnlockableBlankBombs.png Blank Bombs This item does not appear in Repentance.
TBOIRepentance-UnlockableDonkeyJawbone.png Donkey Jawbone This item appeared Antibirth, but it does not appear in Repentance, and was instead made into an attribute of Tainted Samson. In the original mod, it did a melee spin attack when the player takes damage.
TBOIRepentance-UnlockableEvilCharm.png Evil Charm This item is unlocked by default in Repentance.
TBOIRepentance-UnlockablePsyFly.png Psy Fly This item is unlocked by default in Repentance.

TBOIRepentance-UnlockableAppleOfSodom.png Apple of Sodom This trinket was unimplemented in Antibirth, but is unlocked by default in Repentance.
TBOIRepentance-UnlockableIllusionHeart.png Illusion Heart This pickup existed in Antibirth, though it went unused. It does not appear in Repentance. In the original mod, it summons a temporary second character similar to Esau. The character disappears if the illusion heart is lost.
TBOIRepentance-UnlockableRuneOfGebo.png Rune of Gebo This rune appeared in Antibirth, but it does not appear in Repentance. In the original mod, it automatically gives money to machines and beggars without draining the player's resources.
TBOIRepentance-UnlockableRuneOfKenaz.png Rune of Kenaz This rune appeared in Antibirth, but it does not appear in Repentance. In the original mod, it poisoned all enemies in the room for 30 seconds.
TBOIRepentance-UnlockableRuneOfFehu.png Rune of Fehu This rune appeared in Antibirth, but it does not appear in Repentance, likely due to it being too similar to the Ace of Diamonds card introduced in Afterbirth+ and/or the inverted The Hermit card introduced in Repentance. In the original mod, it turned all items and pickups in the room into their equivalent worth in coins.
TBOIRepentance-UnlockableRuneOfOthala.png Rune of Othala This rune appeared in Antibirth, but it does not appear in Repentance. In the original mod, it gave another copy of an item the player already has.
TBOIRepentance-UnlockableRuneOfIngwaz.png Rune of Ingwaz This rune was unfinished and unimplemented in Antibirth, and does not appear in Repentance.
TBOIRepentance-UnlockableRuneOfSowilo.png Rune of Sowilo This rune was unfinished and unimplemented in Antibirth, and does not appear in Repentance.
TBOIRepentance-UnlockableTurbo.png Turbo! This challenge appeared in Antibirth, but it does not appear in Repentance, likely due to it being too similar to the "SPEED!" challenge introduced in Afterbirth. In the original mod, the challenge to reach mom as Cain while the game is sped up. No time limit is present.
TBOIRepentance-UnlockableGhostBabel.png Ghost Babel This challenge was planned to be added in an update to Antibirth, but was never finished and does not appear in Repentance. This challenge would have involved Nightwatches, which do not appear in Repentance either.
TBOIRepentance-UnlockableDimensionRed.png Dimension Red This challenge does not appear in Repentance, as it was seemingly replaced with the Red Redemption challenge.
TBOIRepentance-UnlockableDivideAndConquer.png Divide And Conquer This challenge does not appear in Repentance.
TBOIRepentance-UnlockableBFFBaby.png BFF Baby This co-op baby does not appear in Repentance.
TBOIRepentance-UnlockableDuplexBaby.png Duplex Baby This co-op baby does not appear in Repentance.
TBOIRepentance-UnlockableLotBaby.png Lot Baby This co-op baby does not appear in Repentance.
TBOIRepentance-UnlockablePawnBaby.png Pawn Baby This co-op baby does not appear in Repentance.
TBOIRepentance-UnlockableSaltyBaby.png Salty Baby This co-op baby does not appear in Repentance.
TBOIRepentance-UnlockableKeepersRope.png Keeper's Rope This is the only unlockable that is not a leftover from Antibirth, and thus the only unlockable that is not stored in the unused subfolder. According to lead developer Kilburn, Keeper's Rope exists because Edmund McMillen accidentally designed one extra unlock for The Keeper, and they couldn't find a good spot for it.

Miscellaneous/Unknown

Hot Brimstone

TBOIRepentance-HotBrimstone.pngTBOIRepentance-HotBrimstoneImpact.png

"Hot Brimstone". What this would've been used for is a mystery.

Unused Dream Isaac

Tboirep drawing.png

The spritesheet for the dream sequence containing the endless loop of panicking dreaming Isaacs contain a sprite of him looking up in horror that is not used.
