Vigilante 8 is a vehicular combat game, similar to that of the Twisted Metal series, and a tie-in of sorts for Activision's previous vehicular combat game Interstate 76. The game takes place in the 70's and features 13 playable characters (the 8 in the game's title referring to the 8 already unlocked characters.) The Vigilantes must stop the Coyotes from controlling the world's oil supply for OMAR (Oil Monopoly Alliance Regime). The game has many things to destroy in each level. However, Vigilantes must protect certain environments in the level from being destroyed, whereas the Coyotes must destroy those environments.

The Nintendo 64 version featured an unlockable level not featured in the PlayStation version and was used in its commercial (which eventually got banned). The Nintendo 64 version also included a Quest mode for the super secret character, whereas in the PlayStation version, the character is not playable in Quest mode.

Also interesting to note this was Luxoflux's first video game. The game spawned a sequel, Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense on the Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, and PlayStation. There was also Vigilante 8: Arcade for the Xbox Live Arcade before it was taken down.
