Development:Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (GameCube, Xbox)

This page details development materials of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (GameCube, Xbox).

On April 9, 2023, various files related to a Xbox build of Chamber of Secrets were posted on the Harry Potter Games Archive Project Discord server. Given that this is only data found on cache partitions of a Xbox Debug Kit, there is nothing playable.

The data is split into two folders dated November 15, 2001 and August 4, 2002, suggesting that it was found on two partitions. The November 15, 2001 date is more than likely incorrect, as that is just a generic date set when the Xbox is left unplugged for a significant amount of time.

Models

Stink Pellet and Luminous Balloon do not exist in this build.

Owl Treat

The owl treat was originally a packet of cereal.

This box with this texture can be seen in the final version at Diagon Alley around the Eeylops Owl Emporium shop in a smaller version, placed alongside rat and mouse treats.

MONEY

Proto Final
HPCOS Galleons.png HPCOS SICLKE.png

A small rough model of a Galleon. only Galleons are modeled in this build even if Knuts is refered to exist in some way.

Pumpkin

Proto Final
Hpcos PUMPKIN.png HPCOS Pumpkin final.png

Looks like the pumpkin pie was originally a sort of dried pasty.

Ginny's Spelltape

Proto Final
Hpcos Speellotapes.png HPCOS Spellotape final.png

The roller is purple, bigger, and less well-made. The final model is taller, thinner, and light blue.

Ginny's Quill

Proto Final
HPCOS Quill.png HPCOS Quill final.png

The quill was orange and shaped diffrently.

Ginny's Brassquales

Proto Final

The model was quite the same, only the texture was changed to look gold.

Graphic

HUD

As seen in early screenshots, the UI was more neutral and stylized and displayed the press buttons. Spell icons were similar as seen in the PS2 version.

The action texts were in this build, Sprites that were placed on the buttons seen above. In the final version, the actions are used in text files:

The items in the "quest" tab were 2D images. Curious to note, except for the feather, the items use their final design. The Oraclitus Spheer's portrait had a rounded top, the card book was a little different, and for whatever reason you were supposed to have the cup of the four houses with you.

Hpcos Quest items2.png

A very curious icon that encourages you to do nothing at all for 8 hours. None of this exists in the final HUD.

The health bar had a very different design that could be seen at E3 2002 and in unused files in the PS2 version.

Legal Screen

The EA and WB logos were simple screens rather than FMV. Also present is the Eurocom logo, which is never presented in the game.

A loading screen with gold blur background and a test screen. A very similar screen can also be found in the PS2 version.

Concept art can be found probably as loading screen, can also be found on Playstation 2.

Bouton

The buttons on the title screen were graphics, they are only text with the same font in the final version. Note that the graphics for the Burrow, Expeliarmus Challenge, and the PRESS START button still exist in the final game.

Sound

Harry

Early Final

Generic

Three coin sounds for the Galleon, Knut, and Sickle respectively exist in this build. Two of these were kept for the Sickle and reused for the Ginny stuff in Diagon Alley. The last sound is a very long loop of something that sparkles probably for the coins.
