Gran Turismo 5/GT Mode/Special Events

From The Cutting Room Floor
Jump to navigation Jump to search

This is a sub-page of Gran Turismo 5/GT Mode.

The game's Special Events give players the opportunity to enjoy unique challenges and experiences that are otherwise beyond the norm, ranging from the introduction of kart racing, NASCAR, the wacky and wild challenges at Top Gear, realistic rally racing, and much more. With a huge bulk of the content here being rather dynamic in terms of presentation, there's quite a lot of content that went unused.

Jeff Gordon NASCAR School

In this Special Event, players are brought up to speed on the sport of NASCAR by (actually a voice-acted persona of) Jeff Gordon himself. In the events, the player controls a NASCAR and focuses on many key driving techniques that are required for the racing series. While Jeff Gordon only talks to the player before the start of and after finishing events, there's quite a lot of unused audio that depicts the events being a lot more dynamic; almost every action that takes place during the events has a dedicated audio recording for it, with Jeff Gordon talking to and coaching the player throughout.

Intoduction

These audio clips are grouped with the introduction cutscene that plays when you access the Special Event for the first time. These go unused and are not heard in the game; they were most-likely cut to reduce the length of the cutscene.

The first clip on the table below is rather an unused take of the very last line in the introduction cutscene; the line is said in the cutscene, but a different take with less emphasis is used.

jg015
"I'll be guiding you over the radio."

"I'm really curious to find out how our cars drive on those tracks."
jg018
"I encourage you to take a NASCAR stock car to as many tracks as possible in this game."

"Good luck, buddy."
jg019_2
"Good luck!"

First Challenge

These audio clips were meant to be played during the first challenge in the Beginner level, where the player must follow and draft the car ahead in order to make a pass and complete the event. Jeff Gordon seems to have lines that would indicate he would coach the player throughout every step of the event. What's interesting to note here is that Jeff Gordon in these clips is talking to the player as if he is physically present in the events driving his own NASCAR, but in the events actually used in-game, the player is the one driving his car instead.

Second Challenge

These next set of audio clips were meant to play during the second challenge of the Beginner level, where the player must use their car to draft and pass multiple cars on the course.

Raceday Challenges

These audio clips were to play on the Expert level challenges for the special event. What's unique here is that the first few clips are of an introduction-like cutscene which is not present/heard in the final game, as evidenced by the clear sound of the recordings and lack of filtering. The rest of the sound clips would be played during the challenges themselves, with Jeff Gordon actively guiding the player by telling them which line to position their car in, what opponent cars to pass, if there is an accident on the course, and other situations, including when to pit in. The challenges are simplified in the final version of the game, with the pitting-in scenario being placed into its own challenge instead of occurring mid-race.

In what seemed like a very realistic NASCAR experience was ultimately cut unfortunately, either due to audio buffering/streaming constraints put on the console during gameplay, reduced redundancy in favor of simplification, the result of being absent from other game modes outside of the Special Event, or other reasons; the exact reason is unknown.

"Alright, now I'll be the spotter, and you drive."
jg160
"In oval track racing, there's a person who gets the job of being a spotter. A spotter can be your eyes and ears to tell the driver the relative positions of their car, and the competition around him. With so many cars on the track, the driver needs to stay focused on driving, so the info and directions coming from the spotter on the radio are really important."
jg161
"So let's try this challenge, where you'll race while listening to directions from me as the spotter. Now I'm used to being behind the wheel, so let's see how I do."

Gran Turismo Rally

For this Special Event, players choose a car that complies with event regulations in a continuous championship rally series that takes place on special environments and point-to-point courses, such as gravel, snow, and winding open roads. The game employs a bit of realism into this Special Event by having a co-driver give the player pace notes for the course ahead, as the entire course map is not visible, therefore the player must rely on the co-driver's pace notes to drive through the courses as fast as they possibly can in order to get the best time over the three opponent cars.

Unused Pace Notes

Within the game's files are audio clips of pace notes that are never used throughout any of the races in the Special Event. Most of these callouts highlight particular features of a course, such as crests, bumps, ditches, jumps, and other features. While it is possible for the courses generated throughout the Special Event to contain some of these features (such as very long turns, jumps, and bumps), these audio clips are never heard in the game. It could be possible that these could have been used for courses generated using the two unused Course Maker themes, though it is unknown if these themes would have been used during this Special Event or not.

It is worth noting that there are audio clips in all supported languages in the game for all of the unused pace notes, but only the English ones will be listed here. The Japanese audio clips have an English-speaking co-driver as well, but uses a different accent.

Sebastian Vettel X Challenge

This Special Event is considered to be the ultimate secret challenge in the game, just when players thought they've bested everything the game can offer, as it only unlocks after Level 30. In the event, players drive the Gran Turismo Red Bull X2010 S. Vettel, an extremely fast fantasy race car that exceeds realistic regulations, around three courses for two laps in an attempt to beat the target times. Should they succeed, the game rewards the player with the car to blow through the rest of the game's events with (the car itself is unlocked when reaching Level 35 in B-Spec.)

The Gran Turismo Red Bull X2010 series of cars was previously known as the Red Bull X1 series before the name of the car was changed with Version 1.05 of the game. The unused content below, however, was not updated to reflect the name change.

Missing Audio

Found within the game's text containers are cues for audio files that were supposed to play during the event. The audio files appear to be missing from the game data, however, but the cues still remain. Some of these cues have typos, misspellings, or unusual transcriptions; these are how the cues are found extracted from the text containers themselves and have not been changed/have been pasted directly as-is.

The first audio cues refer to the challenge at Monza.

Source Filename Script
Monza_103_1 "This is the Monza Circuit in Italy."
Monza_103_2 "It's a historic track that's comprised of four straights, tricky chicanes, and high-speed corners, making it a thrilling, super-fast place to race."
Monza_103_3 "Monza is a special place for me because my first ever F1 win came here, in the rain."
Monza_103_4 "The one-lap record of 1 minute, 19 second was set by Juan Pablo Montoya in 2004."
Monza_103_5 "Let's see what you can do out there."
Monza_104 "Hey what are you doing!?"
Monza_105 "What's the matter!?"
Monza_106 "Man, are you crazy!?"

The next audio cues refer to Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, a course that was added as DLC in Version 2.00 of the game. This means that the developers were working on implementing Spa-Francorchamps well before the final release of the game, only to arrive roughly a year later as DLC with Version 2.00 of the game. It would also appear as if this course was meant to set the stage for one of the challenges in the event instead of the Nürburgring GP/F course.

Source Filename Script
Spa_102_1 "This is the Spa Francorchamps in Belgium."
Spa_102_2 "Like the Suzuka Circuit, Spa is defined by its classic layout; really fast straights with lots of exciting corners, some on them on the dangerous side."
Spa_102_3 "The most famous corner here is Eau Rouge."
Spa_102_4 "Nearly every pilot who's driven here loves this track, including myself."
Spa_102_5 "The one-lap track record of Spa is 1 minute, 43 seconds, set by Michael Schumacher."
Spa_102_6 "Let's see how we'll get on in the X1."

The next cues refer to the challenge at Suzuka Circuit.

Source Filename Script
Suzuka_100_1 "Here we are at Suzuka Circuit."
Suzuka_100_2 "It's a very technical and fun track, with lots of challenging sections."
Suzuka_100_3 "Especially the first sector up the hill, along the S's
I raced here first time in 2009, where I took pole position and went on to win the race.
"
Suzuka_100_4 "So you can understand why Suzuka is one of my favorite race tracks in the world!"
Suzuka_101_1 "The 1 minute 28 seconds lap record of Suzuka, was set by Michael Schumacher."
Suzuka_101_2 "Let's see what you can do in the X1."

The next audio cues refer to what appears to be a removed stage or challenge during the event. It would seem as if there would have been a tutorial stage that introduces the player into driving the car for the very first time. Seeing as the car's performance is radically different from anything else in the game, this would have allowed players to warm up to the car and get a feel for its performance and handling.

The text suggests that the stage was meant to take place on a relatively simple course; the context indicates that the course may have possibly been Super Speedway - Twin Ring Motegi, which was another course that was absent from the game at launch and added to the game later as DLC, in Version 2.06, but the exact course that would have been used is unknown. This stage of the event was scrapped for unknown reasons.

Source Filename Script
X1_13 "So let's get going without first challenge."
X1_14_1 "We'll start by taking on a simple test track."
X1_14_2 "This track just has two long straights and two corners."
X1_15_1 "One of the corners is a high-speed turn, and the other one's a tighter, lower speed corner."
X1_15_2 "This track will help you get a better sense of the power and handling characteristics of this machine."
X1_15_3 "The goal here is to learn the response, speed and overall limits of your car."
X1_16 "So I'll lead the way, just try to follow my line."
X1_17_1 "The tires are already warm."
X1_17_2 "Don't worry."
X1_17_3 "Just be careful on the throttle."
X1_18 "Try control the wheelspin."
X1_19 "If you don't, your tires will be damaged."
X1_20 "Try to be careful, in turbo engines like this, there's a bit of a lag after you step on the throttle before the engine's power comes on."
X1_21 "Whoa, you've given it too much throttle there."
X1_22 "Notice how the bulk of the power comes after a slight delay, after you step on the throttle pedal."
X1_23 "You can tell that this car just keeps on accelerating, right?"
X1_24 "The X1 generates huge downforce, which makes the steering quite sensitive at high speed."
X1_25 "The slightest steering input will cause the car to react."
X1_26 "Don't steer more than you need to."
X1_27 "Too much steering will be counterproductive, so you need to keep your steering inputs smooth and minimal."
X1_28 "300km per hour."
X1_29 "400km per hour. Pretty amazing."
X1_30 "Whoa! 500km per hour."
X1_31 "Wow! What a rush!"
X1_32 "Be careful."
X1_33 "You wanna be a little more careful when you're getting on the throttle pedal."
X1_34 "OK, looking good."
X1_35 "Not bad."
X1_36 "Just like that."
X1_37 "Remain calm."
X1_38 "You're doing really well."
X1_39 "OK, OK"
X1_40 "Good, good, really good."
X1_41 "Careful."
X1_42 "Calm down."
X1_43 "Uh oh: Now you've done it."

X1_47 "Hey, where'd you go?"
X1_48 "I don't see your car anywhere."
X1_49 "What're you doing?"
X1_50 "Did you mess up somewhere?"
X1_51 "Oh wait, did you crash or something?"

These cues are miscellaneous cues; they would have probably played after passing (or failing) a challenge, among other unsorted cues here.

X1_60 "That was smooth, with very few mistakes."
X1_61 "That was perfect!"
X1_62 "Congratulations!"
X1_63 "You've passed this lesson."
X1_64 "Let's go to the next lesson."
X1_65 "I'll lead the way. Just follow me."
X1_66 "Did you make a mess of it?"
X1_67 "Wow, pretty impressive."
X1_68 "Aren't you going a bit too fast?"
X1_69 "What the...!?"
X1_70 "Hmm. Something's wrong here."
X1_71 "Hang on, I'm coming to get'cha."
X1_72 "Hey, you're pretty quick!."
X1_73 "Hey, c'mon wait up!."
X1_74 "Hey, where are you?"
X1_75 "Come on, now you're just making me look bad."
X1_76_1 "Have a little respect buddy."
X1_76_2 "I'm a real racing driver."
X1_77 "You like rubbing it in, don't you?."
X1_78 "You know, when someone graduates something, they don't usually come back for more classes."
X1_79 "Yeah, umm. Good run."
X1_80 "Thumbs up. That was impressive driving."
X1_81 "You didn't make any big mistakes and had a really good run."
X1_82_1 "Now that was good concentration."
X1_82_2 "Not that I wasn't concentrating..."
X1_83 "Anyways, good job."
X1_84 "You've definitely got some talent."
X1_85 "Congratulations, you've passed."
X1_86 "Hopefully we'll have a chance to drive together again."
X1_87 "I'm sure I'll be more comfortable with the X1 by then."
X1_88_1 "You're back again?"
X1_88_2 "I thought you had already graduated."
X1_89 "Alright, let's do it."
X1_90 "You're really going for it, aren't you. A bit too aggressive maybe?"
X1_91 "Go ahead, and push it a little harder."
X1_92 "Push it! Go! Go! Go!"
X1_93 "Brakes!"
X1_94 "Brakes, brakes!"
X1_95 "Full Gas!"
X1_96 "Full throttle! Floor it!"
X1_97 "All right, no problem, lets give it another go."
X1_98 "Try again?"
X1_99 "Getting through this section will require a good rhythm in your driving."

...the amusing thing about most of the content above for the event was that it was nearly recycled in full for the sequel title, via the Red Bull X Challenge, with some changes and updates to the challenges. What's more is that while the audio files are missing from this game, some can actually be found in Gran Turismo 6, also unused, for some odd reason. Therefore, it is possible to listen to some of the original recordings for these audio cues.
