Irisu Syndrome! (いりす症候群!, Irisu Shoukougun!) is a freeware Japanese puzzle game with a story that is slowly revealed as the player continues through it.

An unofficial English fan translation was released in 2011. Fan translations made by Chinese (both Simplified and Traditional) and Spanish players have been released officially on Katatema's webpage.

Hmmm...
To do:
  • The Irisu portrait that appears on the left-side of the Desktop during the Good Ending is slightly different than the same image that appears when she "enters" the game (keyword: slightly). Should this be mentioned? The only difference is her eyes and one of them having a black background. data/doc/irisu.dat can be renamed to irisu.bmp (this is the file used for the desktop-appearing effect), data/img.dxa/irisu.png is the file that appears when she "enters" the game. It's possible that the small graphic differences could be due to the different file formats. Comparison between them here.
  • Several .txt files in the game has strings that has been commented out, anything of interest?
  • irisu.exe has one unused "window" dialog and menu. Are these exclusive to the game or are they always found on games that use the DxLibrary? (pictures from the unused dialog and menus taken using Resource Hacker)

Metsu Unlock Code

Elementary, my dear Cactus.
This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: Try doing the unlock code on a fresh save file, and see if the text file really drops on the game's folder or not.

In readme.txt, it's mentioned that it's possible to enter a code to unlock Metsu Mode for those who already had a save file prior to the update. The cheat code can still be used even by having a fresh save file with the Metsu Mode update applied. However, using the cheat code will make "し゛さつうさき゛にっき.txt" (Suicidal Rabbit Diary.txt) unobtainable, as it won't drop into the game's folder anymore.[2]

On the Main Menu screen, press Up (×4), Right (×2), Down.

Chinese Version

Unused graphics that contained text in the Japanese version were translated in the Chinese versions. This is incomplete, however, as the text is the same in both Simplified and Traditional.

Spanish Version

The Spanish version has a few extra unused files included.

o.txt

This game has text or audio that needs to be translated. If you are fluent with this language, please read our translation guidelines and then submit a translation!

o.txt includes a text with the directory's content from C:\src\irisu\data\dat, using Windows' dir command on the Command Prompt. The inclusion of this file might suggest that wtetsu was involved with the Spanish translation in some capacity.

Curiously, _スクリプト命令.txt is not included in either Spanish or Japanese versions of the game.

Variations of the ptxt01.txt files

There are several different versions of the first album's photo description, but only ptxt01.txt is actually used in-game.

Elementary, my dear Cactus.
This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: Was the the OEM850 file read in Windows-850 encoding

"_OEM850" is missing the characters that features accents. "_default" has the accents, but it's not used in the game despite being the correct one grammatically.

According to a blog post made by Maca (Spanish translator), the accents were not working properly in-game, which explains as to why the version with no accents is the one used in-game. The post also mentions that despite this, the .txt files with accents were included in the game files anyway.[1]

Additionally, duplicates of "_OEM850" and "_ISO8859-1" can be found on a folder called "txt" inside dat.dxa.

Unused Photo

As the game is played and unlocks different photos after each game over, additional text files appear in the game directory which elaborate on the game's story. One such text file was not implemented into the game and is thus unable to be unlocked: "うさぎのうーたろう.txt" (which can be translated as "Uutarou the Rabbit.txt"), which sheds a little light onto the context of the block game.

A photo with the file name irisukai_04.jpg might be related to this text.

In the darkness of my closed eyes, the bizarre shapes rain down behind my eyelids.

I continue to break them again and again.
One by one, each gets popped.
As I do this, the confusion in my mind becomes undone.
I noticed it today and throughout the day, and so I continued playing.

Additionally, the file name of this text file is not included inside the "filelist.txt" file. "filelist.txt" includes all text files that are dropped onto the game's folder.

There are two identical files for the logo seen on the standard mode's main menu, one of them called title_logo.png and the other being title_logo_on.png.

The "mouse-over" state on the Start, Album and Ranking buttons, as well the gamemode changer on the bottom-right corner, all have the suffix "_on", which might suggest that the game's logo was originally going to change colors upon mouse-hovering.

In wtetsu's blog, on a post made on December 23, 2009, he mentioned that he would be selling the "full game" (first version + the Metsu mode) on the upcoming Comiket 88, with a plan on releasing to the web shortly after. On that post, two screenshots are available, one with the Metsu mode main menu and one showing a small glimpse of the mode.[3]

Despite the post already using the final version of the logo, browsing through the wtetsu's Hatena Fotolife[4] (a place where all the images he uploaded on the blog can be viewed), an alternate screenshot of the Metsu's main menu can be found, using the early logo:[5][6]

IrisuSyndrome Blog EarlyMetsuMode.png

The early screenshot was uploaded on 12/23/2009 at 20:18:32, and the blog post was published earlier on the same day, at 11:36:17. The current image on the blog post, the one using the final version of the mode, has been uploaded on 12/25/2009 at 01:02:30. That means that the old screenshot has been there, on the post, for about two days.

The time and dates were found by the file nomenclature that is used on the Fotolife's gallery, and the time of the day that the post was made to the blog can be found by mouse-hovering on "2009-12-23".

Revisional Differences

The game received 5 updates after the initial release, but none of them have been archived in any way, therefore, they are currently lost. It's not possible to download the older versions on the official website anymore due to how Vector.co.jp (the website that the Japanese version was distributed to) deletes previous versions upon each version update.
