Interview with Doug Lombardi about the game.

After Gearbox Software were upset about that change of direction for the single-player mode, Valve decided to give the game to Ritual Entertainment, who decided to create single-player levels out of multiplayer maps that Gearbox made prior. The game was planned to have 20 single-player missions, but was cut down to 19 and later was released with only 12 out of the planned 19 missions, with 6 of the missions being added in later updates, making the number of missions 18.
