GamePro #57 (April 1994)

MaximumCarnageGameproPreview.jpg

An issue of GamePro from April 1994 included an early preview of Maximum Carnage with two screenshots each from both the SNES and Genesis versions of the game.

  • The Super Nintendo screenshots feature Venom. The only major difference of note is the HUD. The player's icon is replaced by what appears to be the letter C and the score is colored red instead of white.
  • The Genesis screenshots display Spider-Man in combat with completely different designs for the thug enemies.
  • Unlike the SNES screenshots above, the HUD more closely resembles the one in the final game. However, the player icon is facing left, followed by the number of lives and the score. In the final, the number of lives is placed before the player icon, which faces right. The lives counter seemingly uses the same numbers as the score tally, but upscaled. The lives count would use its own unique font in the final.

Computer and Video Games #150 (May 1994)

CVGMaxCarnagePreview.jpg

CVG issue 150 featured a two-page preview for the game, including many more screenshots and details. Humorously, the article mistakenly refers to Cletus Kassidy as "Max Carnage".

  • A screenshot of Spider-Man lifting a car in Prospect Park is shown on the first page. This would be replaced by a large rock in the final game.
  • The HUD is the same as the GamePro April 1994 preview.
  • Due to being an early build, the backwards-cap thugs are the only enemies shown with no differences in color palette.
  • A screenshot in the center of page two shows Venom swinging towards thugs in a completely unused level that appears unlike any other in the game. He appears to have a hero icon represented by the letters "IG", presumably a placeholder.
  • A screenshot on the bottom right of the same page displays the early Select Hero screen. It says "Select Player" with a different font and what appears to be the word "Darklight" above it. The spider insignia looks unfinished, and Venom's completely missing for whatever reason.
  • The article makes mention of purported Master System, Game Boy and Game Gear versions of the game that were never released.
