Hmmm...
To do:
  • There is much more to be documented. Both in the playable part of the demo, and in hidden menus.

According to when the files in the demo were last modified, this build was compiled on September 24th, 2012 at 7:40 AM.

A demo of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance was originally released on October 30, 2012 as a bonus with Zone of the Enders HD Collection. It was later released on PSN and XBLA on January 29, 2013. Due to the fact that this demo uses a 2012 build of the game as a base, there are a lot of leftover files and content. This includes things like early versions of many iconic songs from the game. This demo houses quite a number of differences from the final game.

Differences during playable demo

Title Screen

One of the first differences that will be spotted when one loads the demo is the drastically different title screen. The demo has Raiden standing in front of a black background, with fire particles everywhere. The final has Raiden standing in front of some cloudy sky while rain falls down. The demo also has a different music track play in the background. The music was changed in release. The demo's title screen's copyright date is 2012, while the final's is 2013.

Another really minor difference is that Raiden doesn't have his knife in his sword sheathe in the demo's title screen, while in the final he does. His sword also seems to be slightly bigger in the demo's title screen.

Health Bar

Another difference that can be noticed if you have a keen eye, is that the demo's UI is slightly different than retail's. The Demo's has a small line under Raiden's name, and above the healthbar itself. This is completely removed in the final game.

Boris Line

A small line that Boris says as you are about to make your way towards your first fight off of the beach, was slightly altered in the final game.

Demo: "Contact us on codec if you have any questions."

Final: "Contact us on codec if you have questions."

Weirdly enough, the line used in the final game resides in the demo's files, alongside an alternate-take of the line.

AR Display Reticle

When using the AR Display mode in the demo, a white rectangle reticle appears in the middle of the screen. This is absent from retail. Likely since it really didn't serve a purpose. The objective marker is also slightly different.

Small Cutscene Differences

The cutscene that plays after the first fight in R-01, has a few noticeable differences between the demo and final versions. In the demo, the enemies don't look damaged at all, while in the final they seem burned, and have smoke coming off of their bodies. Another small difference is that Courtney had different glasses in the demo. Among a few other small differences.

Sub-Weapon Menu Font

In the demo, the font used in the sub-weapon menu was slightly different. The font is altered in the final game.

Item Box Texture Change

The item box in the demo is completely orange on both inside and out. In the final, certain parts of it were changed to black, including the inside.

Demo-Exclusive Screens

After the player defeats Bladewolf, the demo is complete. The screen will fade to black and show these 2 screens. These screens show the people who worked on the game, alongside a general release date, to advertise the final game's release.

Hidden inaccessible menus

Normally, things like the chapter select, customization screen, VR mission screen, and title screen (actual titles you can earn by doing stuff in the game, not the main menu) are completely in-accessible in the demo. However, it is possible to load the phases that contain these menus, and it's possible to see a number of differences with them.

Chapter Select Menu

Probably the menu to go through the most changes. The demo's chapter select screen is vastly different from the finals. Each chapter uses a screenshot of the VGA 2011 trailer of the game. In the top right a "complete" bar can be seen. This is removed entirely from the final's chapter select. The stats for each chapter here are un-edited. The only thing changing about the stats are the BP, the chapter rank, and sometimes there will be "No kills" and "No damage". These stats could come from a Platinum developer's save file, and got leaked into the demo.

The pictures used for the final game's results screen were taken with a new save file, otherwise they would also have stats on the side.

Customization Menu

The Customization menu has a small number of differences in the demo. The icons for "Body", "Wig", and "Skill" in the demo are different. Body and Wig resemble Raiden, while in the final they look much more generic. Skill went from an arm, to someone swinging a sword. The Japanese text in the bottom right of the demo's menu reads: "Please select an item to customize."
