This cactus is UNDER CONSTRUCTION
This article is a work in progress.
...Well, all the articles here are, in a way. But this one moreso, and the article may contain incomplete information and editor's notes.
Careful, you'll lose an eye.
This page or section needs more images.
There's a whole lotta words here, but not enough pictures. Please fix this.
Hmmm...
To do:
  • Compare with the unused early models in the final game for comparison if possible.
  • Slight differences in models, like the protagonist's face shape.

Almost all character models in this build have the outlines as part of the models themselves rather than effects applied by the game.

Unused Models

Early Protagonist

Located in sample/playertest.GMD is what seems to be the earliest version of the protagonist likely leftover from the travelling concept, due to the presence of a suitcase and being in a completely different style from the final and closely matching the heavily-downscaled art of the design plan.

He wears the standard Yasogami High Uniform with a scarf on his head, and a suitcase is present on his model as well. This seems to be a style test, as this model is found amongst other models of varying art styles, with this style being an updated/HD version of the PlayStation 2 game models. This model has three animations: Idle, Walk, & Run

Alongside his main textures are textures for Jonathan Ariga from Catherine likely as the early main character's model was modified from his.

Nanako Dojima

Located in sample/bc_nanako.GMD is a model of Nanako Dojima from Persona 4, sporting an older design & an art style closer to the final game's art style. Her textures refer to her as a figure skater. She has 5 animations, all lifted from the P3P's FeMC battle animations, and her weapon is edited from the FeMC's Naginata.

Vincent Brooks

Located in sample/catherine02_01.GFS is a model of Vincent Brooks from Catherine. He only has one animation, all showing off different facial expressions, and his coat moves a bit during the beginning of the animation. His phone is also present underneath him, slowly closing.

Yukari Takeba

Located in sample/p3yukari.GFS is a model of Yukari Takeba from Persona 3. It seems this model was made as an art style attempt, as the model is posed the same as her 2D artwork. She has one animation, an idle that switches between multiple different faces.

This appears to have been a very early leftover, due to the character models being finalized in Catherine, a video game that served as a testing grounds towards Atlus' new style on next-generation hardware.

Yu Narukami

Located in sample/pophero.GFS is a model of Yu Narukami from Persona 4 in his swimming trunks. His model here is modified from his original PS2 model, having a more detailed face & longer proportions, likely as another art style test. Weirdly, he has one animation of him swinging a bat.

P5 sample pophero.png

Located in sample/bat.GFS is a model of a bat, likely meant to go alongside this model.

NPC Man

An unused NPC is located with the character models. What makes this model interesting however, is this model is with the confidant characters, in model/character/1014/c1014_000_00.GMD. It's texture names do refer to it as an NPC, but since its with the confidant characters, it's possible this model was a placeholder for this slot and another confidant character was considered at some point. Interestingly however, this slot would be taken over by Maruki in Royal.

Early Character Designs

Ryuji

A slightly early design for Ryuji in his summer uniform, where the shirt says "FUCK'IN RULES", which would be changed to NO'MO RULES in the final. The finalized design is present in the Hawaii cutscene, making this a bit of an old leftover.

Or should it say "EFF'IN RULES?" 500px

Futaba

Futaba's early design consistently has her wearing unbranded open-back headphones. These are also present in the final game, but only in her 'casual' outfit.
Otherwise, the final game has her wearing AKG headphones as part of a brand promotion.[1]

Lavenza

Lavenza's early design had her looking more like a maid. Her character portrait is also using this early design.

Mishima

Mishima has many more bandages around his face than in the final version on his injured model, which his character portrait reflects. The shading around his nose and mouth is also much darker.

Mishima's shoes are slightly different, having less green on them than in the final

Mishima's textures in general are much higher quality than in the final version for some reason. This can be seen in the image above.

Shiho's Injured Model

The model for when Shiho is in the hospital blanket after she jumped off the school roof used to be fully modeled. Later, all the unseen parts were removed. The final version still has the textures leftover from this, however.

Shadow Kaneshiro

Shadow Kaneshiro's skin is the same color as his normal model rather than purple. This also applies to his character portraits. Oddly his boss form has the purple skin of the final version, implying his purple skin was exclusive to his boss form before they decided to give it to his shadow form as well.
