Was this originally conceived as a Mario game?

To be honest, tough to say. I've seen a few sites post that around (i.e. MTV), but the original article talking about an interview with a Nintendo alumni notes that it would have been a Mario-style game, not a Mario game. Big difference between the two, and it's not stated explicitly that Mario was intended to be in the game from the get-go as opposed to being put into the game for international appeal. The question is did this prototype originally have Mario in it? --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 15:50, 28 January 2018 (EST)

I never seen any source explicitly saying that Doki Doki Panic was meant to be a Mario game from the start. There are some Mario-elements to the game, like the POW block, as well as a promotional art of Mario with the main character (along with a phone card with Peach and the sister), but nothing that the game itself was conceived to be a Mario entry.
Personally I think Mario 2 fans (as well as clickbait sites like that MTV article and people like Guru Larry) deliberately misinterpret the article in order to make Mario 2 seemed more like a legit Mario games than it actually is, as if Mario 2 being a graphic mod of Doki Doki Panic somehow makes it a lesser game than the other mainline Mario games. Never mind the fact that the game was re-released in Japan with all the Mario edits added-in, included in Mario All-Stars alongside the other three mainline FC/NES games and was even a launch title for Game Boy Advance under the Mario Advance. And of course, all the Doki Doki Panic characters that made it to later Mario entries and spinoffs, such as bomb-ombs, ninjis, shy guys and Birdo. I think it's safe to say Nintendo sees it as a mainline entry nowadays, regardless of its actual origin. No need to spread misconceptions. Jonny2x4 (talk) 16:41, 29 January 2018 (EST)
