I'm here for the occasional contribution, usually for something FFIII or Evolution related

To-Do

  • Begin Evolution Worlds page
  • Look into Evoluton: The World of Sacred Device's Devdiary
  • Add information regarding cut scenarios to FFIII prerelease page.
    • Add Fifth Party slot info, if not there already (Source interview)

Final Fantasy III

Fifth Party slot

According to a developer interview, there were initially considerations to include a fifth party member slot in the game, reserved for guest characters such as Desch and Princess Sara. However, due to the guests in the party being occasional, it was decided to have them aid in battle randomly instead.

Cut Scenarios

Based on the dummied out text present in the Japanese and US versions of the game, it would appear that substantial differences were initially made to certain sections of the game before getting scaled back.

Dialogue for Sasune indicates that Ingus' and Sara's meeting would have been somewhat more dramatic, as Ingus states that he had to spend the night with her. In the final, they have a brief conversation and Sara later appears to send off the Light Warriors

Castle Hein's text indicates that the party was to be separated and Luneth would have had to individually break them out. In spite of a counter being present, only Ingus' dialogue upon rescue remains. Additionally, the Evoker job was to be gained here as another method of fighting Hein (as the summons of the Evoker can bypass the effects of the barrier shift). In the final game, it is gained from the Water Crystal.

Duster has dialogue revealing that the Bard job was originally moved from the Water Crystal to there. Given Duster's minor status, Bard might have been intended to be an optional job in this version.

Saronia had a scenario where Arc would leave to try to find Dragoon equipment on his own, taking Alus with him. The party would eventually find them at the secret shop where they would rejoin. This does not happen in the final and the player can, in fact, go straight to the castle to trigger the Garuda fight without getting any of the Dragoon equipment. The text also mentions finding a key into the Dragon Spire; The tower is already unlocked in all versions of the game.

Evolution Worlds

A port released for the Nintendo Gamecube combining Evolution with its sequel to create two games in one... in theory, at least.

Unused Audio

A lot of audio goes unused, primarily in the first half. Interestingly, it seems like more of the first game was going to be retained compared to what actually ended up happening.

Note that most of these closely match the dialogue of the Dreamcast version.

Storyline Audio

Voice clips related to the storyline.

Chapter 2

Chapter 3

Chapter 4

Character Audio

Voicelines used for NPCs or characters in the hub.

Chain

The ability to talk to Chain outside of recruiting her was removed in Worlds, rendering all of these voice lines unused.

Pepper

Pepper only has an option for her to join the team rather than just talk, meaning that these clips go unused.

Gre

Since Gre only asks to join the party when talked to, these clips go completely unused.

Pannam Port/Kronprinz (First visit)

Worlds skips the Pannam Port and most of the Kronprinz, cutting straight to Eugene's throne room. As a result, all of these go unused.

Kronprinz (Second visit)

The Kronprinz is heavily cut down in Worlds, so most of the soliders and crew got cut, and their dialogue went with them.

Unused music

Regional Differences

The Japanese version has a somewhat detailed image of a mural. The english version uses a simpler blue background. It's worth noting that both of the original games used more "detailed" backgrounds for their title screens, making Worlds stand out. The game's logo is also more abstract compared to Evolutia, which uses a logo similar to the original game.
