This article is a work in progress.
...Well, all the articles here are, in a way. But this one moreso, and the article may contain incomplete information and editor's notes.
Hmmm...
To do:
  • See if any parts of the minigames exist.
  • Find the standalone version of this prototype, and dump it.
Careful, you'll lose an eye.
This page or section needs more images.
There's a whole lotta words here, but not enough pictures. Please fix this.

This page covers a demo version of Ape Escape found on the Summer 1999 issue of PlayStation Underground.

General Differences

  • The room in the opening where Specter puts on the Peak Point Helmet has a completely different texture, a stone wall and floor. This seems to complement his opinion of how he was treated much more than the circus-esque texture found in the final.
  • The sound that plays when Jake appears in the opening is different.
  • The warning screen lacks the siren and plays until the X button is pressed.

Gameplay Differences

  • The monkey dancing on the rock in the final's Fossil Field is just standing there in the prototype, and can even jump off the rock before the player is given control!
  • Upon completing a level, the player is warped to the Time Station, but in the prototype, the Stage Select has its own room!

  • Monkeys in general seem to have heightened awareness.
