Unused Graphics

Victim Portraits

In addition to the 18 possible "target" character portraits that levels can use, there are five separate portraits, prefixed with "victim". These portraits are presumably intended for the mid-game cutscene, however the cutscene is pre-rendered and as such these textures go unused.

The portrait of The Heir used in the cutscene has a red background as opposed to a yellow one, and the portrait of The Mother does not appear at all.

It is also worth noting that one of the target characters also has the name "The Heir", though apart from the name the two characters are completely separate.

Amongst the other in-game GUI icons are three unused icons. Two of them appear to simply be earlier versions of icons which are present in the final game, while icon_health's purpose is not apparent; the game does not have a health system.

Unused Music

Volume Test Track (Vengaboys – "Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!!")

This audio file, located in sharedassets1.assets and titled "Volume Test Track", appears to be the song "Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!!" by the Dutch band Vengaboys. It was used as placeholder level music before the actual music was composed. The track can be heard in the Vines at 2:43 and 2:55 in the video on the right, recorded during Volume‍ 's development.

Unused Sounds

Elementary, my dear Cactus.
This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: Is the file "Yup" used?

The names of some of the VO files in sharedassets1.assets are suffixed with "_ALT", indicating that they are alternate recording runs, replacing the originals. For the most part, the original files are not present, but a few of them are. The unused original versions do not have associated subtitles. Additionally, there are some unused subtitles for older versions of files that have been removed, including VO_AI_observesSuccess_75, which was replaced with VO_AI_observesSuccess_75_alt (the text of each is identical).
