New Bark Town

DMYMAP (October 6th, 1998) Backup (October 2nd, 1998)

Final (Unused, November 10th, 1998) Final (August 10th, 1999)
PKMN GS Map2A 7AFB TS20.PNG PokemonGSC-New Bark Town.png

The buildings changed around a bit. In the DMYMAP version, Prof. Elm's house was moved to where the Pokémon Center was, and the neighbor's house was added. There's no water in this version, meaning that you could easily enter Route 27. The file name of the early map is SIZUOKA.MAP (Shizuoka), while the final map is WAKABA.MAP.

There is also a variant of the map only found in the BACKUP folder. Named SIZUDMY.FLD, it removes the neighbor's house entirely.

Cherrygrove City

DMYMAP (October 6th, 1998) Final (Unused, December 24th, 1998) Final (June 4th, 1999)
PokemonGSC NAGOYA.FLD early.png PKMN GS Map2A 76C3 TS20.PNG PokemonGSC-Cherrygrove City.png

The DMYMAP version has some very interesting use of the pagoda tiles not seen in the final unused map, and lacks the gate between Route 29. It also contains a Gym. It's possible that it was the last Gym, akin to how Viridian City was the second city but had the final Gym. The file name of the early map is NAGOYA.FLD, while the final map is YOSHINO.MAP.

Violet City

DMYMAP (October 6th, 1998) Final (Unused, December 11th, 1998) Final (June 14th, 1999)
PokemonGSC NARA.FLD early.png PKMN GS Map2A 5659 TS1F.PNG PokemonGSC-Violet City.png

The arrangement of the city is completely different, even to the final unused map.

  • The Pokémon Center and Mart are approximately in about the same spot as the Gym is.
  • There are four houses, each seeming to represent a different element. While these houses were roughly kept, their positions were shifted around to be less symmetrical, and were opened up significantly.
  • Sprout Tower is in the place of the Ruins of Alph, and requires Cut to access.

The early map file name is NARA.FLD, while the final map is KIKYOU.MAP.

Unused Town

DMYMAP (October 6th, 1998) Final (Unused, December 14th, 1998)
PokemonGSC SINGUU early.png PKMN GS Map2A 680D TS1F.PNG

The layout of the map was completely overhauled. Its file name is SINGUU.MAP (Shingu in Wakayama Prefecture).

Azalea Town

DMYMAP (October 6th, 1998) Final (Unused, December 10th, 1998) Final (July 13th, 1999)
PokemonGSC ARITA.FLD early.png PKMN GS Map2A 69F3 TS1F.PNG PokemonGSC-Azalea Town.png

It seems that Game Freak were unsure whether or not to put a Gym here, as it was removed in the later version only to then be added back in the final. The file name is ARITA.FLD (Arida in Wakayama Prefecture), while the final map is HIWADA.MAP.

Goldenrod City

DMYMAP (October 6th, 1998) Final (Unused, November 2nd, 1998) Final (August 3rd, 1999)
PokemonGSC OSAKA.FLD early.png PKMN GS Map2A 5D07 TS20.PNG PokemonGSC-Goldenrod City.png

While the DMYMAP version doesn't seem to differ much from the final unused map, it has some notable differences. For one, the gates use the standard roofs, and are missing the exit carpets. Also, while the structure of the Radio Tower appears to be similar, the tiles that make it up were shuffled around quite a bit.

The file name of the early version is OSAKA.FLD, while the final map is KOGANE.MAP.

Ecruteak City

The early unused maps are identical to the ones found in the final game.

Olivine City

The early unused maps are identical to the ones found in the final game.

Mahogany Town

DMYMAP (October 6th, 1998) Final (Unused, December 15th, 1998) Final (April 19th, 1999)
PokemonGSC IGA.FLD early.png PKMN GS Map2A 71AF TS1F.PNG PokemonGSC-Mahogany Town.png

Whereas the unused early map in the final game is more-or-less the same in layout to the final game, the DMYMAP version is completely different. It's unclear whether the traditional pagoda house was originally the Gym or the entrance to Team Rocket HQ. The file name is IGA.FLD, while the final map is CHOUZI.MAP.

Lake of Rage

DMYMAP (October 6th, 1998) Final (Unused, December 15th, 1998) Final (June 9th, 1999)
PokemonGSC BIWAKO.FLD early.png PKMN GS Map2B 4180 TS1F.PNG PokemonGSC-Lake of Rage.png

Another case where the location's landmarks flip-flopped. Despite being earlier, the DMYMAP version is more similar to the final, and is only missing the Fishing Guru's house. The file name is BIWAKO.FLD (Lake Biwa), while the final map is IKARI.MAP.

Blackthorn City

The early unused maps are identical to the ones found in the final game.

Kanto

Pallet Town

One of the few maps that is completely identical to the final map.

Viridian City

Generation I DMYMAP (October 6th, 1998) Final (June 23rd, 1999)
PokeGen1-Viridian City.png PokemonGSC TOKIWA.FLD early.png PokemonGSC ViridianCity.png

Aside from Route 1's entrance and some of the mountains being shifted, it is identical to the Gen I map. The early version's file name is TOKIWA.FLD, and the final is TOKIWA.MAP.

Pewter City

Generation I DMYMAP (October 6th, 1998) Final (August 21st, 1999)
PokeGen1-Pewter City.png PokemonGSC NIBI.FLD early.png PokemonGSC PewterCity.png

The Pewter Museum of Science is still open! Evidence exists in the final game that this one would originally have been included in the game. The early version's file name is NIBI.FLD, and the final is NIBI.MAP.

Cerulean City

Generation I DMYMAP (October 6th, 1998) Final (August 12th, 1999)
PokeGen1-Cerulean City.png PokemonGSC HANADA.FLD early.png PokemonGSC CeruleanCity.png

Surprisingly, Cerulean Cave is still here, suggesting that it might have returned at one point, as is the robbed house. The early version's file name is HANADA.FLD, and the final is HANADA.MAP.

Lavender Town

Generation I DMYMAP (October 6th, 1998) Final (June 22th, 1999)
PokeGen1-Lavender Town.png PokemonGSC SION.FLD early.png PokemonGSC LavenderTown.png

The layout in the DMYMAP version is identical to Generation I, and as a result the Soul House is missing. The early version's file name is SION.FLD, and the final is SION.MAP.

Vermilion City

Generation I DMYMAP (October 6th, 1998) Final (August 10th, 1999)
PokeGen1-Vermilion City.png PokemonGSC KUTIBA.FLD early.png PokemonGSC VermilionCity.png

Vermilion City is the first example of something that is common in the Kanto maps: Many of them actually combine surrounding Routes into a single map. In this case, Vermilion City's DMYMAP version also contains Route 6. The early version's file name is KUTIBA.FLD, and the final is KUTIBA.MAP.

Celadon City

Generation I DMYMAP (October 6th, 1998)
PokeGen1-Celadon City.png PokemonGSC TAMAMUSI.FLD early.png
Backup (October 14th, 1998) Final (May 31st, 1999)
PokemonGSC TAMAMUSI.FLD later.png PokemonGSC CeladonCity.png

More merged maps. Celadon City's DMYMAP version contains both Routes 7 and 16 in the map. As with the other gates to Saffron City, they're missing in the DMYMAP version. The backup version contains it, but only half of it is included on Route 7, unlike the final map. All early versions lack the entrance to Cycling Road and the Celadon Café.

The early version's file name is TAMAMUSI.FLD, and the final is TAMAMUSI.MAP.

Fuchsia City

Generation I DMYMAP (October 6th, 1998)
PokeGen1-Fuchsia City.png PokemonGSC SEKITIKU.FLD early.png
Backup (October 14th, 1998) Final (August 21st, 1999)
PokemonGSC SEKITIKU.FLD later.png PokemonGSC FuchsiaCity.png

Another example of merged maps. Fuchsia City's DMYMAP version also contains Route 18, which also lacks the exit to Cycling Road. Strangely, the backup version has half of the exit, but the backup version of Route 17 does not have the other half of it. The gate to Route 15 is farther out and lacks an exit carpet, and the gate to Route 19 is still missing. Both early maps are closer to the Generation I map, and even contain the zoo and Safari Zone entrance.

The early version's file name is SEKITIKU.FLD, and the final is SEKITIKU.MAP.

Saffron City

Generation I DMYMAP (October 6th, 1998) Backup (October 14th, 1998) Final (August 22nd, 1999)
PokeGen1-Saffron City.png PokemonGSC YAMABUKI.FLD early.png PokemonGSC YAMABUKI.FLD later.png PokemonGSC SaffronCity.png

For whatever reason, all of the gates in the DMYMAP version of Saffron City are missing. They were added back in the backup version, but they are all missing exit carpets. Both early maps also lack the Copycat's house and the Magnet Train station. The early version's file name is YAMABUKI.FLD, and the final is YAMABUKI.MAP.

Cinnabar Island

Generation I DMYMAP (October 6th, 1998) Final (July 1st, 1999)
PokeGen1-Cinnabar Island.png PokemonGSC GUREN.FLD early.png PokemonGSC CinnabarIsland.png

The DMYMAP version is identical to Generation I, before the volcano erupted. The early version's file name is GUREN.FLD, and the final is GUREN.MAP.
